Luka Doncic dropped 27 points – 21 of them in the second half alone – as his Dallas Mavericks went to Los Angeles and handed the Lakers and LeBron James their first loss in ten games.
Kristaps Porzingis added 15 points, but it was Doncic who was again the star of the show, the 20-year-old adding 10 assists and 9 rebounds in another remarkably well-rounded offensive performance.
The Lakers had lost only once since their opening night defeat to the Clippers, but were no match for the surging Mavericks, who have now won seven of their last eight games. James put up another gaudy 29 point, nine rebound, eight assist stat line, and Anthony Davis added 27 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for Los Angeles to continue their longest winning streak in over a decade.
The Lakers led 62-59 at the half, before a 28-5 outburst to start the third quarter from Dallas, largely sparked by Doncic, who had 16 points and five assists in the third stanza alone.
The Mavericks were able to maintain their lead in the last quarter, again thanks to Doncic, who punctuated the victory with a wild step-back three-pointer of his childhood hero James.
The Lakers have had an incredibly tame schedule to start the season, but face a stern test in the next week with a three-game road trip to Denver, Utah and Portland.
The Mavericks are in New Orleans on Tuesday night.
