    Philadelphia Flyers History

The Philadelphia Flyers were part of the National Hockey League’s massive expansion during the 1960s. As they were founded in 1967 and have been a staple of the league ever since. Some of the most historic players to ever play the game have come through the city of brotherly love and they’ve had some iconic teams as well earning nicknames such as the Broad Street Bullies.

They found near instant success in the league as they won two Stanley Cups within their first 10 years as a member of the National Hockey League. Those titles would come in back to back seasons during the 1973–74 and the 1974–75 season. However, they have failed to reach the mountaintop since.

In fact they’ve actually reached the Stanley Cup Finals on eight different occasions but have lost six of those appearances. However, it is still fair to say that they have been one of the most successful teams of the expansion era. They are consistently in the hunt for a Stanley Cup trophy nearly every single season.

During their first year in existence during the 1967–68 season, they actually won the division championship. However, they didn’t make much noise in the playoffs as they went on to be knocked out in the first round. In year number two they returned back to the playoffs but once again we’re knocked out in Round 1, this time in a four-game sweep.

They would remain consistent throughout the first 12 years of their existence as they made the Stanley Cup Playoffs 11 times within that time span. Two of those appearances obviously resulted in Stanley Cup victories as well. Philadelphia would also make two other Stanley Cup appearances during the decade but would lose both of those.

The 1980s was also another successful decade for the Philadelphia Flyers as they made nine Stanley Cup Playoff appearances in 10 seasons. They would add another two Stanley Cup Finals appearances during the 1980s but would lose to the Edmonton Oilers both times.

As great as the 1970s and 1980s were, the 1990s, no pun intended were a bit rocky. They would miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first five years of the decade. During that time they would fail to finish any higher than sixth place in the division and wouldn’t win more than 37 games in a single season.

The back half of the 1990s felt like a return to relevance for the Flyers as they would close out the century with five straight playoff appearances. From 1995-00 they would also reach the Stanley Cup once again. However, they were swept by the Detroit Red Wings during the 1996-97 season.

The 2000s were a great time for the Philadelphia Flyers as they made the playoffs every single season besides the lockout year in 2004-05 and the 2006-07 season. During this time period they would also further their heated rivalry with their heated cross state rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins, as they would meet the Penguins twice in the playoffs.

However, Philadelphia found themselves on the losing end of that series both times as they went a combined 3-8 against Pittsburgh in back to back seasons in the playoffs. In the final year of the decade the Flyers once again reached the Stanley Cup Finals. But once again found themselves on the losing end after the Chicago Blackhawks beat them in six games.

The 2010s have been a mixed bag for the Philadelphia Flyers. They have had some postseason success and have also missed the playoffs nearly more times in this decade than any other in franchise history.

In their six playoff appearances during the 2010s, they once again found themselves losing to Pittsburgh once and beating them once and finishing with a combined record of 8-8 in two series between the Pennsylvania teams.

The 2020s aren’t off to the best start as they’ve failed to reach the playoffs in both seasons. However, the 2021-22 campaign was by far the worst as they only managed to match their win total from 2020-21 while playing an additional 26 games. Philadelphia finished in last place of the Metropolitan Division and as the second worst team in the entire National Hockey League.
