    New York Rangers History

The New York Rangers are one of the oldest franchises in the history of the National Hockey League. They are one of the original six franchises to compete in the National Hockey League as well, as they were formed in 1926 by Tex Rickard.

They were the first team to win the Stanley Cup that was not based in Canada in 1927-28. They would go to win an additional two Stanley Cups during those early years in 1932-33 and 1939-40.

The Rangers would then go on to struggle for the majority of the next thirty seasons as they only managed to make 12 Stanley Cup Playoff appearances between the 1940-41 season and the 1969-70 season. However, they would start to get back to their winning ways in the 1970s despite still not winning a fourth Stanley Cup trophy.

During the 1970-71 season they would win their first playoff series in over twenty years but would quickly be eliminated in the second round. Although the 1970s still weren’t the highest heights that the franchise reached, they did make one Stanley Cup Finals appearance during the decade. It came during the 1978-79 season where they lost to the Montreal Canadiens.

The 1980s were decent to the New York Rangers as they would make the playoffs in all but one season over the course of the decade. The decade also brought back some playoff success as they would win at least one playoff series in five out of the ten years. Then in the middle of the 1990s they would go on to win their fourth and final Stanley Cup trophy to date during the 1993-94 season.

Over the course of that championship winning playoff run they would compile a record of 16-7 when they swept their rivals the New York Islanders, defeated the Washington Capitals in five games, defeated the New Jersey Devils in seven games to win the conference, and defeated the Vancouver Canucks in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals as well. It was an incredible series that the Rangers nearly let slip away after leading 3 games to 1 at one point.

As strong as the early 90s were, the late 90s proved to be even weaker as they would miss the Stanley Cup playoffs every single season between 1997 and 2004. After a slow start to the 2000s, they would go on to make the playoffs in 11 of the next 12 seasons and even appear in a Stanley Cup Finals at one point as well. However, they would go on to lose to the Los Angeles Kings in 2013-14 in five games.

It’s been rough pretty recently for the Rangers as they missed the playoffs in three out of the last five seasons dating back to the 2018-19 season. However, they will be looking to build off of the Eastern Conference Finals appearance they made during the 2021-22 season, that absolutely nobody outside of Rangers fans could have seen coming.

They finished the season with a record of 52-24-6 and made their first playoff appearance since the 2017 season. They overcame a three games to one deficit in the first round to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Then they would make another incredible comeback after trailing the Carolina Hurricanes 0-2 as well. Before ultimately blowing a lead of their own to the then two time defending Stanley Cup champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals.
