    San Jose Sharks History

The San Jose Sharks are one of the newer teams in the league as they were founded during the early 1990s, in 1991. They have never won a Stanley Cup trophy, but they did appear in one Final, back in 2015-16 when they won the Western Conference Finals. They also have six division championships to their name as well.

During the first two years of their existence they played their home games at the famous Cow Palace Arena outside of San Francisco. The first draft pick in the history of the franchise was Pat Falloon, who was drafted second overall in 1991. He would go on to play only five years with San Jose and an additional five years around the National Hockey League.

Their first couple of seasons went about as you would expect for a young, brand new team. As they struggled to find their footing and would eventually set a National Hockey League record for losses in a regular season with 71. A record that still stands today, and likely will continue to stand for as long as the National Hockey League is around.

After losing 71 games the previous year, the San Jose Sharks added 23 wins to their record and qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a record of 33-35-16 during the 1993-94 season. In the first round they shocked the Detroit Red Wings and beat them in seven games, thus knocking out that year’s favorite to win the title. However, their run would come to an end after a second round loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games.

The following season the Sharks found their way into the postseason again after finishing with a record of 19-25-4 and once again won their first round series in seven games. Then they lost in the second round in four games for the second straight season as well.

The rest of the 1990s were a mixed bag as they missed the playoffs during the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons. However, they made a couple of playoff appearances to close out the decade in 1997-98 and 1998-99. Although they finished with losing records in both seasons and lost both their first round series in six games.

The 2000s were a successful time period for the San Jose Sharks and it has arguably been the best decade of their existence as they have made several playoff appearances and even finished as the best team during the National Hockey League regular season in 2008-09.

The end of the 2000s and the start of the 2010s also featured a multi-year run of finishing the regular season with one hundred or more points several times, including the previously mentioned league high in 2008-2009. Between the 2007-08 and 2010-2011 season they won four straight Pacific Division titles as well. They won at least 48 games in all four of those seasons and came close to a few more trophies as well.

The 2015-16 season was their best yet, as they found themselves making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. They finished the regular season with a record of 46-30-6 and won three playoff series. They defeated the Los Angeles Kings in five games, the Nashville Predators in seven games, and the St. Louis Blues in six games. Eventually they would lose the Stanley Cup to the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.

After making the Stanley Cup Finals that season the Sharks returned to the playoffs the following three seasons. However, it basically went nowhere as they suffered a first and second round loss as well as a Conference Finals loss, all coming in six games. Following the 2021-22 season where they finished as one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League with a record of 32-37-13 they have now missed the playoffs three years in a row.
