    New York Islanders History

The New York Islanders were formed in 1972 by the National Hockey League. Their main goal in forming the Islanders was to stop the World Hockey Association from adding a team on Long Island. As the NHL wanted to be able to have a team that could play in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

It didn’t take long for the team to find nearly instant success in the league as in year three they would begin a string of 14 straight Stanley Cup playoff appearances. During that run they would go on to win four straight Stanley Cup trophies in the last year of 1970s and the first few years of the 1980s.

Their record of 19 straight playoff series victories in the first four years of the 1980s is something that is likely never going to be matched again in any other professional sport as well as hockey. As of 2022 they are the last North American sports franchise to win four straight championships, and they likely will be the last one as well.

Unfortunately for the Islanders, after the run of championships ended they ran into a ton of trouble. Mostly financial trouble among other things like an aging roster and several arena issues as well as dropping attendance, which is strange when you consider just how dominant they were a short time before.

From the period between 1988 and 2016 they failed to even win a single Stanley Cup playoff series, and they still have not won a division title since the late 1980s. The Islanders had the privilege of playing in one of the most epic games in the history of the National Hockey League.

It happened in 1987, not long after their dynasty had ended. As they played a playoff game against the Washington Capitals that would forever be titled “The Easter Epic”. The game went into four overtimes and ended when Pat LaFontaine scored in the fourth one, which just so happened to be early at 2am on Easter Morning after the game started on Saturday evening.

However, it was the goalie Kelly Hrudrey who had perhaps the most epic performance of them all as he stopped 73 shots. Sadly for the Islanders they would still go on to lose that series to the Capitals that year.

They just opened a new arena in 2021 in Belmont and ownership as well as the league are hoping that will help with some of their attendance and off the ice issues. Due to their success in the early 1980s, the New York Islanders are considered a historic franchise by many hockey fans around the world.

They have several hockey Hall Of Famers like Mike Bossy, Clark Gillies, Pat LaFontaine, Roberto Luongo, Denis Potvin, Billy Smith and Bryan Trottier. Head Coach Al Arbour and General Manager Bill Torrey were around for all four of the New York Islanders Stanley Cup wins as well and deserve just as much credit to the success of this franchise as the players out on the ice.

Seven of those eight Hall Of Famers, excluding Pat LaFontaine were the core that made up those Stanley Cup winning teams and their status in the Hockey Hall Of Fame is rightfully deserved.

To go along with their four championships, the Islanders have also won six conference titles and six division titles as well. All of which came back when they played in the Pacific Division which later became the Atlantic Division and now the current Metropolitan Division. That truly puts into perspective how long it’s been since this once great franchise has been back on top of the National Hockey League.

The 2021-22 season wasn’t much better for the Islanders as they came into the year with playoff hopes. Unfortunately for them it didn’t go that way as they would finish the season under .500 and once again miss the Stanley Cup playoffs. They finished in fifth place of the Metropolitan Division with a record of 37-35-10.
