    Washington Capitals History

The Washington Capitals were founded in 1974 and have one Stanley Cup trophy to their name but they have appeared in two Stanley Cup Finals. They have also won three President‘s Trophies which are given to the best team in the regular season in the National Hockey League, as well as 13 division championships.

They are certainly a franchise that has had a lot of regular season success but not much postseason success yet. One of their franchise legends, Alex Ovechkin, is one of the greatest hockey players of all time and is for sure going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer.

The first decade of existence wasn’t exactly the most successful as they had constant struggles throughout the 1970s. In fact it took eight years for them to reach their first Stanley Cup playoff appearance. They made their first playoff appearance in 1982-83 but lost in the first round to the New York Islanders in four games.

That first playoff appearance would kick off a string of 14 straight Stanley Cup playoff appearances as the Washington Capitals quickly improved after a rough start to their franchise history. It would also be the origin of the rivalry with the Pittsburgh Penguins, as they would meet the Penguins in the playoffs almost every single season it felt like.

The Capitals faced off with the Penguins in the playoffs five times during that 14 year streak. The final two meetings between the two would be the final two years of that 14 year straight playoff appearance streak, when they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round twice in a row. Over the course of those five meetings, the Capitals only won one of those series while Pittsburgh won the other four.

Their playoff streak finally came to an end in 1997. However, they didn’t have to wait long to get back into the postseason, as they reached the Stanley Cup Finals the very next year but they lost to the Detroit Red Wings. They would end up missing the playoffs the year after in 1998.

In 1999-00 and 2000-01, a familiar opponent returned for the Capitals in the playoffs as they were knocked out two years in a row in the first round by the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 2001-02 they missed the playoffs and in 2002-03 they qualified but lost in the first round to Tampa Bay.

For the next three seasons they failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs but finally made their return during the 2007-08 season when they lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in seven games. They would qualify for the playoffs again the following year and even beat the New York Rangers in a series before losing once again to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Overall they’ve been a pretty consistent playoff team throughout the majority of the new millennium they have made several playoff appearances but up until the late 2010s they never really went anywhere. The 2017–18 season is where it finally all paid off as the Washington Capitals won their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

Since bringing home the Stanley Cup, the Washington Capitals have consistently made the National Hockey League postseason but they have yet to return to the Finals and win another trophy. In fact they have now lost in the first round for the last four seasons in a row since winning it all in 2018.

However, they have been consistent in the regular season and have won two division titles and won at least 41 games each of the last three full years. In 2021-22 they finished in fourth place of the Metropolitan Division, which ended up being their worst finish since 2013-14 as they won 44 games. They went onto lose to the Florida Panthers in the first round of the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs.
