Australian Open Predictions 2022: SportsTips’ Top Tennis Picks For Men’s Quarterfinals
Mon 24th January 2022

The 2022 Australian Open rolls on and SportsTips.com are previewing all four of the men’s quarterfinal action. Read below to check out our tennis picks for the games over the quarterfinal round!

We are now into the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and boy are there some interesting matchups. The third seed, Zverev was knocked out in the last round, in straight sets, which certainly opens the door for other players still left in the draw.

Enjoy our free tennis picks and predictions for each round of the 2022 Australian Open tournament.

Denis Shapovalov (14) vs Rafael Nadal (6)

Not sure if anyone saw this matchup! The 14th seeded Canadian, Denis Shapovalov, will face off against Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal. In his last round, Shapovalov absolutely took control of the match against Zverev, winning in straight sets, and his confidence will be sky high coming into this one. So far this Australian Open, Nadal has only dropped one set, and he would have certainly thought he was going to play Zverev in this round, so he will need to change his thinking to take down the high flying Canadian.

Denis Kirilov

Denis Shapovalov slowly, but surely makes his way to the top 10 once again. He has been part of this emblematic list just once in his short career – in 2020 when we reached world No. 10. The 22-year-old Canadian has improved his game which helped him top his best performance at Grand Slam tournaments. In 2021, he reached the Semi-Finals of the Wimbledon as he got eliminated by Novak Djokovic in three straight, but narrow sets. The young tennis prospect surely has a lot of potential to become one of the most recognizable and versatile players on the ATP Tour, but he will need to continue developing his game. He has been a bit hesitant in his first couple of games in Melbourne as he lost sets to Laslo Djere, Soonwoo Kwon, and Reilly Opelka. However, in the Fourth Round, he surprised everybody by defeating the German favourite, Alexander Zverev, in straight sets. Shapovalov ended up having 35 winners, winning 81% of his attempts at the net. His ability to make a lot of high-risk shots throughout a match surely helps him take the initiative in the particular moment.

Rafael Nadal continues his journey for a record 21st Grand Slam title and a second one in Australia after winning the tournament back in 2009. The Spaniard played quite well during the first couple of matches this year. He won the title in the first ATP tournament of the year in Melbourne defeating Maxime Cressy in the final in straight sets. In his opening two Rounds at the Australian Open, Nadal didn’t face any trouble as he spent a bit over 4 hours on the court defeating Marcos Giron and Yannick Hanfmann in straight sets. However, ever since then, he has shown some concerning signs after losing a set to Karen Khachanov and almost losing the opener against Adrian Mannarino. The Spaniard managed to defeat the French in straight sets, but this happened only after saving 4 set points in a tie-break thriller in the first set. Nadal has all the skills needed to withstand the power of Shapovalov’s unpredictable shots, but it will take a lot of his energy throughout the match. I think we might see 5 sets here as the two players are quite even at the moment in my opinion.

Denis’ Australian Open Pick: Total Sets – Over 4.5

Katherine Mouradian

Out of all the four matches on the men’s side of the draw, this is the one I am most excited to see. There weren’t many people that would have thought Denis Shapovalov would make it past Zverev, let alone in straight sets, yet here we are! Shapovalov faces another tough opponent in Rafael Nadal. Can Shapovalov cause another upset? Shapovalov has spent a reasonable amount of time on the court, so his fitness will be key in this one. Nadal has presented few opportunities for his rivals to take advantage of, only dropping the one set so far.

The pair have met four times in the past, and it is Nadal that leads the head-to-head, 3-1. They last faced each other in the 2021 Italian Open, and Nadal won in three sets (in a best of three format). Shapovalov will need to clean up his unforced errors, and in particular his double faults if he wants to cause another upset. The Canadian does know how to steal a set from the former world number one. While I think Nadal will win the match, it is my prediction that Shapovalov will go out all guns blazing in the first set to try and gain control of the match.

Katherine’s Australian Open Pick: Set 1 Game Handicap – Shapovalov +1.5 (-120)

Jack Hartman

Before the tournament many looked at the draw and the prospect of a Nadal vs Zverev quarterfinal was mouthwatering. However this dream matchup was put to bed by Denis Shapovalov, who produced arguably the match of his life to dispatch Zverev in straight sets in the previous round. It was a result that nobody saw coming but it has really opened up the draw and made this tournament feel really wide open. Shapovalov is a player who is growing in maturity and stature all the time and is clearly building on his semi final appearance at Wimbledon from 2021. After such a positive win, Shapovalov will head into this match against Nadal full of confidence, knowing that he has beaten him in the past including the last time these two locked horns. The two have played six times and the head to head record stands at three wins apiece. This will be the first time that Shapovalov would have played Nadal in a Grand Slam and it will be fascinating to see if the Canadian can physically stand up to the challenge coming his way.

Rafa Nadal continued his march towards history with a fourth straight set win of the tournament. His victory over Adrian Mannarino included an epic 16-14 first set tie-break which took almost half an hour to complete. Nadal seems to be in a good rhythm and doesn’t seem troubled by his foot injury – he has a phenomenal chance of lifting a 21st major title here. This match will come down to whether Shapovalov can hold up to the physical test that Nadal is bound to bring. This match could go the distance and I feel the longer the match goes, the more likely it is that Nadal will emerge as the winner. In a contest which I think could go either way – it makes sense to back their being over games in the match.

Jack’s Australian Open Pick: Total Games – Over

Gaël Monfils (17) vs Matteo Berrettini (7)

The French entertainer, Gaël Monfils, has made it to another quarterfinal at a Grand Slam, and standing in his way for a spot in the semifinals is Matteo Berrettini. Monfils is enjoying a fantastic run so far in the Australian Open, as he is yet to drop a set, and he is looking primed for more of the same. Berrettini has spent a lot of time out on the court, as he has only managed one three set match, which was in the last round, against Carreño.

Denis Kirilov

Gael Monfils will play yet another Quarter-Final at the Australian Open after reaching the same stage in 2016. He started off the season in a fantastic mood after winning the title in Adelaide without dropping a single set. The situation in Melbourne is no different as he has been merciless against Federico Coria, Alexander Bublik, Christian Garin, and Miomir Kecmanovic. The 35-year-old French player will be looking to top his best result at the Australian Open and to match his two Semi-Finals from Paris and New York. Monfils has been relentless when playing defence as he is able to chase down most of the balls sent to him. His court coverage is simply out-of-this-world, but on top of that, his forehand can be very deadly sometimes.

Matteo Berrettini has been quite hesitant from the beginning of the year. The world No.7 lost twice in the ATP Cup to Alex De Minaur and Daniil Medvedev. He then had to play three matches before having a clean victory at the Australian Open by defeating Pablo Carreno Busta in the Fourth Round. Brandon Nakajima and Stefan Kozlov surprisingly took a set away from the Italian, while Carlos Alcaraz came really close to making a full comeback from 2 sets down, but Berrettini pulled himself together and won the deciding tiebreak. He has spent a lot of time on the court already which might be crucial for his ability to perform on a high level in the second week of the tournament. Berrettini has improved a lot since 2020 as he managed to reach the Final at Wimbledon and the Semi-Final at the US Open. The Italian’s aggressive style of play has won him a lot of matches, but he still has some flaws in his game. Something in me tells me to go with Monfils, but I will pick the safer option which will be an intense match with at least 4 sets and a lot of back-and-forth moments, meaning I will choose “over 40.5 games”.

Denis’ Australian Open Pick: Total Games – Over 40.5 (-125)

Katherine Mouradian

There are four interesting matchups in the quarterfinals, and this one has certainly grabbed a lot of people’s attention, when the 17th seed, Gaël Monfils takes on the seventh seed, Matteo Berrettini. It seems like there is something about Monfils in this tournament that I’m loving to see. He is still the greatest showman, but it looks like he has an underlying serious tone, and he means business this time. Monfils is yet to drop a set in his first four games. Berrettini has spent considerably more time out on the court compared to his rival, with only one of his four games going to three sets, and who can forget that mammoth five setter against Alcaraz in the third round.

The pair have played each other twice before, and it is currently Berrettini who is leading the way, 2-0. The last time they played each other was at the 2021 ATP Cup, and Berrettini got the job done in straight sets. Berrettini’s recent experience in the latter stages of Grand Slams will serve him well, but Monfils is also not one to crack under the pressure. This match presents a significant step up in difficulty for Monfils, but I expect him to rise to the challenge. This one could very well go the distance.

Katherine’s Australian Open Pick: Total Games – Over 40.5 (-125)

Jack Hartman

French flair meets Italian power in a fascinating matchup between Gael Monfils and Matteo Berettini. After a troubled 2021 where Monfils was greatly troubled by injury it’s great to see the enigmatic Frenchman back at this stage of a Grand Slam. This is his best run in Melbourne since 2016 and he will be looking to match his previous best Grand Slam results where he reached the semifinals of the French Open in 2008 and Wimbledon in 2016. The tournament so far has been a breeze for Monfils who has sailed through to this stage without dropping a set. Monfils will be delighted with his progress so far, no stranger to long matches, it’s exciting that Monfils can head into this match as fresh as he could possibly ask for. Monfils will need to be at his best as he has lost both previous contests against Berettini and is yet to have won a set.

Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini showed his powers of recovery in the last match by beating Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets. There were serious question marks heading into the match regarding his fitness following his epic third round win over Carlos Alacaraz, but he put those fears to bed with his most dominant display of the tournament so far. Unlike most of the players still left in the draw, Berettini knows what it takes to reach the final of a Grand Slam, having reached the final at Wimbledon last year. This is a match he will think he has a strong chance of winning and I do too. The first set in this clash will be huge and I feel it’s imperative that Monfils wins it. Monfils will get a set on the board but eventually will be blown away by the Italians power.

Jack’s Australian Open Pick: Set Betting – Berrettini 3-1

Stefanos Tsitsipas (4) vs Jannik Sinner (11)

Another five set match for the Greek (freak) Tsitsipas, and in the quarterfinal he will face off against Italian Sinner. It took a massive effort from Tsitsipas to get the fifth set and take the win from his American opponent Fritz. Sinner, on the other hand, had an easier battle, as he beat the homegrown favorite, De Minaur, in straight sets.

Denis Kirilov

Stefanos Tsitsipas survived a 5-set thriller against the young American, Taylor Fritz, in the Fourth Round. The Greek was trailing back with 2-1 sets, but he managed to make a full comeback in the end after being more focused and accurate in the most clutch moments. Tsitsipas has shown some weak sides of his game throughout this edition of the Australian Open as he also lost sets to Sebastian Baez and Benoit Paire. His First-Round victory over Mikael Ymer marked his easiest match so far as he finished the task in just over 2 hours of playing time. His first serve protects him a lot in the last three matches as he makes some unexpected unforced errors from time to time. The world No. 4 will try to go back into the top 3, but this can happen only through a win over Jannik Sinner in the Quarter-Finals. They have faced each other three times already as Tsitsipas took the upper hand on two occasions. However, each one of these meetings was on a clay court which cannot really serve as a good benchmark.

Jannik Sinner reached his second Quarter-Final at a Grand Slam tournament after the French Open in 2020. His best performance at the Australian Open was a Second Round from 2020 as he faced Denis Shapovalov and Marton Fucsovics in his two appearances. The young Italian prospect showed an improvement in his game as he was quite dominant so far in Melbourne. Sinner cruised past Joao Sousa and Steve Johnson in straight sets in his opening rounds. He then faced a bit of trouble in the second set against Taro Daniel, losing it 6-1. However, in the end, the Italian picked up a convincing 3-1 win that sent him against the home-favourite, Alex De Minaur, in the Round of 16. Sinner took a really decisive tie-break in the first set that gave him enough physical and psychological boost to start off the next two sets with a break of serve, leading him to closing out the match in straight sets. The 20-year-old has a lot in common with Roger Federer’s playing style and he is fantastic both from backhand and forehand. I think this will be a really tough one to call, but at the end of the day, I will go with Jannik Sinner who has been outstanding so far this season.

Denis’ Australian Open Pick: Jannik Sinner

Katherine Mouradian

After defeating the last Aussie in the men’s side of the draw in straight sets Jannik Sinner is back again to take on Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinal. Sinner was dominant in his last match, well, every match really, only dropping the one set so far. It isn’t the same story for Tsitsipas who has only had one three set match, which was back in the first round. Tsitsipas had a mammoth five set match, where he eventually got the better of American, Fritz.

The pair have played each other three times before, with Tsitsipas leading the way 2-1. With all the tennis the Greek has played, it is difficult to know whether he will have the legs for this one. But he is certainly the type of player that runs hot and cold, which leads me to think this one is going the distance.

Katherine’s Australian Open Pick: Set Betting – Over 3.5

Jack Hartman

Stefanos Tsitipas edged a thriller in Round 4 and just edged American Taylor Fritz to earn the final spot in the quarterfinals. It wasn’t a great performance by the Greek, but he showed his spirit and fighting qualities and did exceptionally well to recover from losing the first and third sets. Tsitsipas seems to still be fighting his game and is still making uncharacteristic mistakes but that won’t bother him as he continues his progress through the draw. This will be the first time that he would have ever played Jannik Sinner in a Grand Slam but he leads the head to head series 2-1. The last time these two met was in Barcelona last April with Tsitsipas winning comfortably in straight sets. This is set to be a different challenge altogether.

Jannik Sinner reached his first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal following a dominant display against hometown favourite Alex De Minaur. It was Sinner’s best performance of the tournament who seemed to get better as the match wore on. Sinner is seeing the ball fantastically well and is on a run of ten straight victories which stretches back to last year. Unlike many from Italy, Sinner seems at home on the hard courts and it seems the quicker the court is, the better it is for him. At just twenty, Sinner seems to carry himself like an experienced veteran and he won’t be phased by the challenge ahead of him. In a match that is tight to call, I think Sinner’s greater weight of shot and confidence will carry him to victory here. Sinner has a real shot of winning this tournament.

Jack’s Australian Open Pick: Jannik Sinner

Felix Auger Aliassime (9) vs Daniil Medvedev (2)

Well, it is the first time in history there are two Canadians in the quarterfinal of a Grand Slam, as not only has Felix Auger Aliassime made the quarterfinals, but also Denis Shapovalov. Auger Aliassime will face his toughest test yet when he comes up against Medvedev. The Russian was successful against American, Cressy, in the last round in a close match that went to four sets.

Denis Kirilov

Felix Auger-Aliassime will have one of the toughest tasks one can have at a Grand Slam. He will face the second seeded, Daniil Medvedev, who is the bookmakers’ favourite to win the title at the Australian Open. The young Canadian had to go through some really big obstacles in order to reach the Quarter-Finals as he defeated players like Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Daniel Evans, and Marin Cilic. He struggled a lot against the Spaniard in the Second Round, but after four dramatic tie-breaks, Aliassime managed to close out the match. Then, Evans didn’t even make him sweat throughout their 1:55 hours meeting in the Third Round as Aliassime dropped just 6 games to the British player. In the Round of 16, the young Canadian took down the finalist from 2018, Marin Cilic, after losing the first set.

Daniil Medvedev has been playing quite well from the beginning of the year. He started off with a loss to Ugo Humbert in the ATP Cup, but he made up for that performance with two victories over Alex De Minaur, Matteo Berrettini, Felix Auger-Aliassime. The match against the Canadian was a complete whitewash in favour of Medvedev as he won 4:6, 0:6 for just over one hour of playing time. His journey at the Australian Open has been not so dominant as he dropped sets to home-favourite, Nick Kyrgios, and the high-flying, Maxime Cressy. However, he has been merciless against Henri Laaksonen and Botic Van De Zandschulp. In my opinion, he has a safer playing style than Auger-Aliassime who relies much on his forehand winners. On top of that, the Canadian spent a lot of time on the Australian courts already which will surely make things go Medvedev’s way. The Russian’s defence is also better in my opinion and I think he will be able to cruise past Aliassime yet once again this year.

Denis’ Australian Open Pick: Set Betting Medvedev 3-0

Katherine Mouradian

Auger Aliassime has had some really close matches so far in this Australian Open, but he has managed to come through just fine, and will be up against the second seed, Medvedev, in the quarterfinals. Throughout the entire tournament (and even before it started) Medvedev was the favorite to win, and certainly nothing has changed. He dropped two sets on his way to the quarterfinals, and managed to get the win over American Cressy, in a tough four set battle.

The pair have played each other three times before, with Medvedev showing his dominance, leading the head-to-head, 3-0. They met not all that long ago, in the ATP Cup, which was in January 2022, and Medvedev dominated, winning 6-4, 6-0. Both players have great records so far this year, but it is really hard to go past Medvedev in this match. He has spent less time on court, and is certainly the more experienced player when it comes to going deep in Grand Slam tournaments. I don’t think the pressure will get to Medvedev and he will easily win the match.

Katherine’s Australian Open Pick: Total Sets – Under 3.5

Jack Hartman

Felix Auger Aliassime is a player who seems to have massively snuck under the radar to reach this stage of the tournament. This is the third Grand Slam in a row that the young Canadian has reached at least the quarter final stage of the tournament following a quarter final and semi final at last year’s Wimbledon and US Open. Auger Aliassime’s tournament got off to a hard start with a battling five set win over Finland’s Emil Ruusuvori however since then impressive wins over Davidovich – Fokina, Dan Evans and Marin Cilic have all followed for the loss of just two sets. The win over Cilic was a great result,  he lost the first set 6-2, but the Canadian battled hard to then win the next three sets which included two via tie-breaks. This is a different test as he comes up against Daniil Medvedev. Medvedev owns a 3-0 head to head record including a straight sets win just a few weeks ago at the ATP Cup. He is going to need a career best performance if he is to find a way past the Russian.

Daniil Medvedev has had a challenging draw up to this stage of the tournament playing players who offer a huge amount of variety. Medvedev, the favourite for many to lift a second consecutive Grand Slam title, has lost two sets in matches against Henri Laaksonen, Nick Kygrios, Botic Van De Zandschlup and Maxime Cressy. He has had to overcome challenging moments in all of these matches, but Medvedev and his team will be delighted that he has been able to push through them. Medvedev is just a nightmare matchup for most players thanks to his remarkable consistency, he can soak up bundles of pressure and with his serve create pressure scenarios of his own. He was my pre-tournament pick before a ball was struck and despite this being another challenging match I expect him to advance to the semi finals and do so fairly convincingly.

Jack’s Australian Open Pick: Set Betting – Medvedev 3-0
