We are now into the quarterfinals at the French Open and boy are there some interesting matchups. The #1 seed, Świątek, is successfully through to the quarters, and she has to be feeling good about her chances, as the next highest seed left in the draw is Pegula, who is 11th, and these two players will actually meet in this round. Out of the eight players that are left in the draw, two of them are unseeded.

Enjoy our free tennis picks and predictions for each round of the 2022 French Open tournament.

Martina Trevisan vs Leylah Annie Fernandez (17)

Unseeded Martina Trevisan will face her toughest test to date, when she will play Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez. This is the first time Trevisan will play a seeded player at the French Open, but in her previous four matches, she is yet to drop a set and has been taken to a set tiebreaker only once. After a shock appearance at the US Open Final, Leylah Annie Fernandez is once again making a deep run in a Grand Slam. Fernandez has successfully navigated her way through the 14th and 27th seeds to book her spot in the quarterfinals.

Jeffery Thomas

It’s a battle of two lefties in the quarterfinals of the French Open on the women’s side when Canadian Leylah Fernandez and Italian Martina Trevisan match up on Tuesday. Trevisan has been to this stage before, making the quarterfinals of the French Open back in 2020 where she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. She was just a qualifier back then but has improved a lot since, and is coming off a title run in Rabat last week. Her nine-match winning streak will be put to the test against 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez, who just seems to live for these big moments. Fernandez took out Belinda Bencic and then one of the best clay courters this season, Amanda Anisimova in the Round of 16.

Leylah is the first Canadian woman to make it to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros since Eugenie Bouchard back in 2014. I think this will be a tightly contested contest of two players who will not go down without a fight, but in the end I give the edge to Fernandez. She is the better server of the two and I think she has the more dynamic game. Trevisan’s success has been on the back of a lot of winners which I don’t see in this match with Leylah’s speed and ability to run down almost every ball. Give me the Canadian teen who has shown us before that she can have Grand Slam success.

Jeffery’s French Open Pick: Moneyline – Fernandez (-190)

Marko Nadin

Leylah Annie Fernandez is only 19 years old and is going after her second Grand Slam Final after she reached the US Open last year. The Canadian is currently ranked at no. 18 with her career-highest ranking being one spot higher. She is 16-7 for the season and 6-3 on clay. Fernandez is coming off a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Amanda Anisimova in the Round of 16 match and she also needed three sets to go past Belinda Bencic in the third round. In the opening two rounds, Fernandez won in straight sets against Kristina Mladenovic and Katerina Siniakova.

Martina Trevisan is ranked at no. 59 which is her career-best ranking. This is her second time in the French Open quarterfinal after she reached the same stage in 2020. The 28-year-old is 19-10 for the season and 12-4 on clay. The Italian has yet to lose a set at the French Open this year as she has won the previous matches in straight sets against Harriet Dart, Magda Ninette, Daria Saville and Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Fernandez and Trevisan have never played each other before.

Marko’s French Open Pick: Moneyline – Fernandez (-190)

Jack Hartman

A quarterfinal that nobody would have predicted as Leylah Fernandez takes on Italian Martina Trevisan. Trevisan is as big a clay court specialist as you would wish to see and it’s no surprise to see her reach this stage of the tournament considering her love for the surface. Trevisan who is currently ranked 59 in the world has made the most of a kind draw. In her four wins so far the highest ranked player she has played has been at 49 in the world, so she is yet to come up against a player of the caliber of Fernandez. Trevisan is more at home on the surface than her opponent and she will be confident of securing the upset and reaching her first ever Grand Slam semifinal.

Huge questions were asked of Leylah Fernandez after the heartbreaking nature of her US Open Final defeat to Emma Radacanu. Many were curious as to how the Canadian would respond and after a tough start to the season, Fernandez looks to have recaptured some of the form that took her all the way to the final at Flushing Meadows. This is Fernandez’s best run at the French Open and it has come a little out of the blue considering how poorly she played at both Madrid and Rome. When you look closely at Fernandez’s game, she should have all of the tools to do well on the clay and she has to be the heavy favorite to make another Grand Slam semi.

Jack’s French Open Pick: Set Betting – Fernandez 2-0 (+130)

Coco Gauff (18) vs Sloane Stephens

We are guaranteed to see an American in the semifinals, as we will see Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens go toe-to-toe. Gauff has made quick work of all her opponents so far in the French Open, and she has matched her previous best result here. Being unseeded, Stephens has had a few tough matches, but she has successfully overcome the likes of Cîrstea (26th seed) and Teichmann (23rd seed).

Jeffery Thomas

In a rematch of the second round matchup at last year’s US Open, we get two Americans who are trying to make it to the semifinals of this year’s French Open. Coco Gauff has made it to this point of the tournament without dropping a set and in her last match against Elise Mertens she only lost a total of four games. It was the first seeded opponent Gauff had faced up to that point, so it was nice to see her get through that test unphased. A whole new test now awaits as she gets the dangerous veteran Sloane Stephens who has found her form once again at a Grand Slam event.

She was the runner up here in 2018 and a quarterfinalist in 2019, and so far has taken out two seeded opponents and only dropped two sets through four matches. Her last match may have been the most impressive, taking out red-hot Jil Teichmann 6-2, 6-0. When Stephens and Gauff met at the US Open last year, Sloane came on top 6-4, 6-2 and I’m not sure why Stephens is such a huge underdog here but I like her to keep this one close with the young teen who is not nearly as experienced at this stage in her career.

Jeffery’s French Open Pick: Game Spread – Stephens +3.5 (-125)

Marko Nadin

The two Americans will play each other for the first time this season after Sloan Stephens won 6-4, 6-2 at the last year’s US Open. Stephens is currently 64th in the WTA ranking with her best ranking being at no. 3. She is 10-7 for the season and 4-4 on clay court. Stephens made it to the French Open final in 2018 when she lost to Simona Halep after winning the opening set. The 29-year-old lost a set in the opening two rounds of the tournament against Jule Niemeier and Sorana Cirstea and then won in straight sets against Diane Parry and Jil Teichmann.

Cori Gauff is the youngest player left in the tournament as the American is only 18. She is currently ranked at no. 23 with her best ranking in her young career is at no. 15. Gauff is back at the French Open quarterfinals after she lost to Barbora Krejcikova last year. She hasn’t lost a set yet in this years’ tournament defeating Rebecca Marino, Alison Van Uytvanck, Kaia Kanepi and Elise Merents in straight sets on her way to the quarterfinal. Gauff is 18-10 for the season and 8-3 on clay.

Marko’s French Open Pick: Moneyline – Gauff (-194)

Jack Hartman

A battle of the Americans awaits as Coco Gauff takes on Sloane Stephens. Gauff has made her second successive French Open quarterfinal and along with Swiatek is the form player in the draw having not yet lost a set in this year’s Championship. Despite being on the Tour for a few seasons now, it’s easy to forget that Gauff is still just 18 years old. A player destined for the top, Gauff’s game seems to be in really good shape and it’s clear she is still improving all of the time. The key for Gauff here will be patience. She is the bigger hitter of the two and should dominate the majority of the rallies. However when Stephens is on her A Game, she is as steady as they come and can frustrate even the very best. It will be interesting to see how she can handle the pressure and occasion.

Sloane Stephens almost enters these Grand Slam tournaments flying completely under the radar and it’s easy to forget the career that she has had. Stephens is a Grand Slam winner and lost in the final here in 2018. She is incredibly comfortable on the clay as the slow surface plays perfectly to her strengths. It’s a bit of a surprise to see Stephens make it this far, considering her form in the lead up to the tournament has been nothing short of horrendous, with Stephens losing in the first round of Charleston, Madrid, Rome and Strasbourg. The two have only ever played once and it was Stephens who emerged victorious, beating her younger compatriot in the first round of last season’s US Open. Considering the form Gauff is in currently, I think she will turn that result around here.

Jack’s French Open Pick: Set Betting – Gauff 2-0 (+130)

Veronika Kudermetova (29) vs Daria Kasatkina (20)

We get an all-Russian duel in the quarterfinals, when we see Veronika Kudermetova take on Daria Kasatkina. The 29th seed has strung together some great performances so far at the French Open, which includes beating Keys in the Round of 16. Kasatkina’s first round match was canceled, but since then she has won all three of her games in straight sets.

Jeffery Thomas

Daria Kasatkina is on to her second French Open quarterfinal after blitzing past Italian Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-2 on Monday. The Russian, who is ranked 20th in the world, has not dropped a set yet through the first rounds. In fact, her serve has only been broken twice and with one more win here she would make it to her first Grand Slam semifinal. Veronika Kudermetova had to battle back from one set down against Madison Keys in the Round of 16 but did so only dropping four games in the final two sets.

This is her first time making it past the third round at a major, so she comes into this matchup with a disadvantage in the experience department. The last matchup between these two ladies saw a three-set thriller and with so much on the line, I’m expecting a similar match play out on Wednesday. It was Kasatkina who prevailed in that one and I see her once again getting past her compatriot to make it to the final four for the first time in her career.

Jeffery’s French Open Pick: Set Betting – Kasatkina 2-1 (+270)

Marko Nadin

Daria Kasatkina is currently ranked 20th in the WTA rankings with her career-best being in 10th place. The 25-year-old is 22-10 for the season including 11-3 on clay. She has been playing great so far at the French Open, not allowing any opponent to win more than 3 games in a set. On her way to the quarterfinals, Kasatkina defeated Rebecca Sramkova, Fernanda Contreras Gomez, Shelby Rodgers and Camila Giorgi. The Russian has won the only match so far against Kudermetova in three sets last year in St. Petersburg.

Veronika Kudermetova is 29th in the WTA rankings with her career-best being at no. 22. She is 20-10 for the season and 13-6 on clay. This is the first time she has made it to the quarterfinals at the French Open. On her way to the quarters, she defeated Zhu Lin, Alexandra Krunic, Paula Badosa and Madison Keys. Her best result so far this season is the final in Istanbul where she lost to Anastasia Potapova.

Marko’s French Open Pick: Moneyline – Kasatkina (-200)

Jack Hartman

In a sign of just how open the women’s draw is, very few people would have predicted that this all Russian affair between Veronika Kudermetova and Daria Kasatkina would have come to pass. Kasatkina heads into the match up the higher ranked player and the player with a better overall Grand Slam pedigree. Kasatkina returns to the quarterfinal stage at Roland Garros for the first time since 2018. She is yet to advance past this stage in her career.

Her compatriot Veronika Kudermetova is competing in her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal but she looked like she belonged at this level after she blew Madison Keys away in their last Round of 16 encounter. Having lost the first set to the big hitting American, Kudermetova showed why she is such a good player on clay, by sweeping up the next two sets for the loss of just four games. Kudermetova has had a slice of luck to reach this far when world number 4 Paula Badosa had to withdraw from their match due to injury, but Kudermetova has fully capitalized. Both players know they have the ideal opportunity to reach a first ever Grand Slam semi final and this is a tight match to call. The two have only met once before and it was Kasatkina who emerged victorious in a three set battle. I think we will see a repeat of that result here.

Jack’s French Open Pick: Set Betting – Kasatkina 2-1 (+270)

Iga Świątek (1) vs Jessica Pegula (11)

The final women’s quarterfinal clash will see the world #1, Iga Świątek, up against the top seeded American left in the draw, Jessica Pegula. The Pole faced a tough opponent in Zheng in the Round of 16, and she had to come back from a set down to claim the victory. So far Pegula has had two matches go the distance, and the other two won in straight sets.

Jeffery Thomas

Iga Swiatek was pushed once again in the Round of 16, but this time it resulted in her actually losing a set, which is something that hadn’t happened in 10 matches. She’s been so dominant that it was a shock to everyone and it even seemed she had a chance of losing, but she quickly got back on track, only losing two games the final two sets. The winning streak is still alive and now sits at 32 matches, with the next challenger being American Jessica Pegula. Pegula had to come back from down a set against Irina Begu in the last round and is now assured a spot in the top 10 when the new rankings come out.

She’s aiming for more though and a signature win here over the world number one would put her in the driver’s seat to bring home her first Grand Slam title. It’s a longshot though and I see this one going very similarly to their meeting in Miami earlier this year. Iga won that matchup in two sets, with the second one being tightly contested. Pegula is a fighter so she won’t go down easily, but in the end it will be Swiatek getting the streak up to 33 matches.

Jeffery’s French Open Pick: Set Betting – Swiatek 2-0 (-270)

Marko Nadin

Iga Swiatek is having an amazing season so far. She made it to the top of the WTA list and currently is on a 32-game winning streak. The 20-year-old won the French Open in 2020 and is the main contender to do the same this season as well. She has already won 5 tournaments this season and has a 41-3 record including 13-0 on clay. On her way to the quarterfinals, Swiatek defeated Lesya Tsurenko, Alison Riske, Danka Kovinic and Qinwen Zheng.

Jesicca Pegula is one of few players who can say that she doesn’t have a negative record in the head-to-head matches against Swiatek, as both players have won once in their previous encounters. But all that will change in the French Open quarterfinals as Pegula stands no chance against Swiatek. The 28-year-old American is currently ranked at no. 11 which is her career-best. On her way to the French Open quarterfinals, Pegula defeated Qiang Wang, Anhelina Kalinina, Tamara Zidansek and Irina Begu.

Marko’s French Open Pick: Set Betting – Swiatek 2-0 (-270)

Jack Hartman

Just for a moment the rest of the women’s side of the draw were offered a glimmer of hope when Iga Swiatek dropped her first set of the tournament after she surprisingly fell behind to her Chinese opponent Qinwen Zheng. Swiatek would go on to show her all of her class, dismissing the Chinese player for the loss of just two games in the second and third sets. With a women’s draw that is wide open, Swiatek is the undoubted favorite to lift her second Roland Garros title and will take all the stopping in this match.

Jessica Pegula continued her fine season and her victory over Irina Begu has seen the American reach her second consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal. Pegula showed what a clever player she is, adapting her tactics and showcasing all of her battling spirits to find a way to win over three tight sets. Pegula knows she faces a huge uphill task in this quarterfinal. Pegula’s game doesn’t match up well to Swiatek and the American knows she is going to be vastly overpowered in this match. The two have met twice before with the pair winning once each. Pegula is bound to battle but it won’t be enough against the world number one.

Jack’s French Open Pick: Set Betting – Swiatek 2-0 (-270)
