SportsTips’ NHL Power Rankings 2021: Week 10
Mon 22nd March 2021

We reach Week 10 of the NHL season, and things are really starting to shape out. The Capitals move up the NHL power rankings into the No. 4 spot with an outstanding week. The Colorado Avalanche also moved up the rankings to No. 6.

Most teams saw a one or two spot change, but San Jose fell the most, dropping seven spots. The Islanders also saw a significant decline, falling out of the top five. It should be an exciting week ahead.

Our rankings are based upon a number of factors, including recent level of play, injuries, and quality wins.

1. Tampa Bay Lightning

Stanley Cup Odds: +600
Record: 23-6-2
Last Week’s Ranking: 1

Tampa Bay remains in the top spot in the Power Rankings. The Lightning had a busy week, but an outstanding one as well, going 4-1-0. They lost at home to Nashville to start the week, 4-1, then swept the next four games. That included all three games of their three-game homestand. Tampa Bay allowed 13 goals during the week while scoring 18. They continue to thrive behind goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, who is fourth in the NHL in goals-against average at 1.86.

It is a lighter week for the Lightning, who have three games on the road, two in Dallas and one in Carolina. Tampa Bay is 10-4-2 on the road.

2. Carolina Hurricanes

Stanley Cup Odds: +1100
Record: 20-7-3
Last Week’s Ranking: 2

Carolina stays in the No. 2 spot in the rankings, despite going 0-1-2. The Hurricanes are still 7-1-2 in their last 10 and that deserves some consideration, especially considering that this team is still without their No. 1 goaltender. Carolina lost to Detroit on the road, 4-2, then lost two games to Columbus at home, both in extra time.

This week, the Hurricanes travel to Columbus seeking a little revenge. They have a huge contest against Tampa Bay at home on Saturday, and that may determine if they are able to stay in the No. 2 spot in next week’s rankings.
