SportsTips’ NHL Power Rankings 2021: Week 9

SportsTips’ NHL Power Rankings 2021: Week 9
Tue 16th March 2021

We reached Week 9 of the season, and there was a lot of jockeying in the Top 10 of our NHL power rankings this week. Tampa Bay returns to the top spot with Carolina jumping two spots into the No. 2 position. The New York Islanders also moved up two spots to the No. 3 spot while Vegas dropped three places to No. 4.

The Boston Bruins continue their freefall, dropping out of the Top 10 for the first time this season. Philadelphia also continues to drop.

Our rankings are based upon a number of factors, including recent level of play, injuries, and quality wins.

1. Tampa Bay Lightning

Stanley Cup Odds: +600
Record: 19-5-2
Last Week’s Ranking: 2

After three weeks out of the top spot, Tampa Bay returns to the No. 1 position in the Power Rankings. That came courtesy of an impressive week this saw the team go 3-1-0, including winning two of three games on the road.

Tampa Bay’s offense is electric right now, scoring 20 goals. They did allow 15 total goals during the week, but this is the team with the top winning percentage in the NHL right now and they are deserving of this top spot. Tampa Bay has five games this week, including four at home.

2. Carolina Hurricanes

Stanley Cup Odds: +1200
Record: 20-6-1
Last Week’s Ranking: 4

Carolina is on an eight-game winning streak, and that helps to catapult them into the No. 2 position in the rankings. Carolina swept their three games last week, taking both games against Nashville at home before defeating Detroit on the road on Sunday. Carolina is winning big right now and they do not even have starting netminder Petr Mrazek back yet. It is scary to think how good this team may be come playoff time.

Carolina has one more game in Detroit before returning home to face Columbus for a pair. This should give the Hurricanes an opportunity to easily reach an 11-game winning streak.

3. New York Islanders

Stanley Cup Odds: +2200
Record: 19-6-4
Last Week’s Ranking: 5

As red-hot as Carolina is, the Islanders are even better. They have won nine straight games, sweeping their four contests last week. They defeated Boston and New Jersey at home before sweeping the Devils in New Jersey over the weekend. The Islanders are getting exceptional goaltending, allowing eight total goals during the week.

This is going to be a tough week for the Islanders, as they travel to Washington on Tuesday before welcoming Philadelphia for a pair of games. If they can win in Washington on Tuesday, they may come out of this week on a 12-game winning streak.

4. Vegas Golden Knights

Stanley Cup Odds: +800
Record: 18-6-1
Last Week’s Ranking: 1

Vegas drops out of the top spot in the Power Rankings, falling all the way to fourth. It was not that the Golden Knights had a terrible week, as they went 2-2-0. The two losses were against the red-hot Minnesota Wild, so nothing to hang your head low about that. However, with how well New York and Carolina are playing, it was inevitable that this team would fall in the rankings.

Vegas has an interesting week ahead, as they have two games at home against San Jose who is playing better of late, before traveling to Los Angeles for a pair of games over the weekend.

5. Florida Panthers

Stanley Cup Odds: +2200
Record: 18-5-4
Last Week’s Ranking: 6

Florida moves up one spot, thanks to a three-game winning streak. Florida defeated Columbus twice in Columbus before defeating Chicago at home on Saturday. The Panthers scored at least four goals in each of the three games.

Florida remains at home for the first three games this week, battling the Blackhawks again on Monday before Nashville comes to town for Thursday and Saturday contests. Florida then travels to Tampa Bay to take on the Lightning on Sunday.

6. Washington Capitals

Stanley Cup Odds: +2200
Record: 17-6-4
Last Week’s Ranking: 7

Washington won all three of their games last week, extending their winning streak to four straight games. That helped the Capitals to move up one spot in the Power Rankings. They defeated New Jersey in overtime at home on Tuesday before sweeping the Flyers in Philadelphia.

Washington takes on the Sabres in Buffalo on Monday before returning home to begin a six-game homestand. The Capitals face the red-hot Islanders on Tuesday before welcoming the Rangers for a pair of games over the weekend. Washington has scored five goals in each of the last three games and could easily put up five against Buffalo. It will be interesting to see how many they can produce against the Islanders.

7. Minnesota Wild

Stanley Cup Odds: +1800
Record: 17-8-1
Last Week’s Ranking: 10

Minnesota enters the week on a four-game winning streak after sweeping all four of their home games last week. That included two victories over Vegas before sweeping Arizona. The Wild allowed four total goals during the week, pitching a shutout against both Vegas and Arizona. They have scored four goals in each of the last three games.

The Wild close out their five-game homestand against the Coyotes on Tuesday. They then travel to take on the Avalanche for a pair of games in Colorado.

8. Toronto Maple Leafs

Stanley Cup Odds: +650
Record: 19-9-2
Last Week’s Ranking: 3

It was a tough week for the Maple Leafs, going 1-3-0. That dropped Toronto five spots in the rankings as they lost two of three games to Winnipeg before losing in Ottawa on Sunday. Goaltending is struggling for Toronto of late, as they allowed 16 total goals over their last four games.

It is a light week for Toronto as they only have two contests. They welcome Calgary over the weekend.

9. Pittsburgh Penguins

Stanley Cup Odds: +2500

Last Week’s Ranking: 13

Pittsburgh is red-hot, winning five straight games. That helped to move them up four spots in the Power Rankings, reaching into the Top 10 for the first time this season. The Penguins allowed just four goals last week, including shutting out Buffalo behind Casey DeSmith on Saturday.

Last Week’s Ranking: 11

13. Edmonton Oilers

Stanley Cup Odds: +2200
Record: 18-12-0
Last Week’s Ranking: 15

Edmonton had a good week, going 3-1-0. They earned victories in the first three games of the week, extending their winning streak to four straight games. That also helped to turn what looked like a disaster for their seven-game homestand into a winner as they had lost the first three games but responded by winning the last four.

Edmonton now heads to the road for two games against Calgary starting on Monday. They then return home to take on Winnipeg on Thursday and Saturday.
