The No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers (18-1, 7-1 Big 10), one of the NCAA’s top scoring defenses, play host to the Maryland Terrapins (12-6, 3-4 Big 10) on Sunday.Maryland defeated the Michigan Wolverines 64-58 at Xfinity Center on Thursday.
Jahmir Young had a standout performance with 26 points. The Terrapins slipped to 10th in the Big Ten Conference. Purdue won their fifth in a row in dominant fashion on Thursday at Williams Arena, beating the Minnesota Golden Gophers 61-39.
Braden Smith had 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, carrying the team. The Boilermakers remain first in the Big Ten Conference. The teams are meeting for the only time this season. Purdue won the only game between the teams last season 62-61 at Mackey Arena in February 2022. Fatts Russell led all players in scoring with 24 points, nine rebounds, and six assists in the losing effort.
Sasha Stefanovic had 17 points for the Boilermakers, while Trevion Williams added 12 points. Young is averaging 15.8 points per game to lead the Terrapins in scoring this season. Young also has dished 2.8 assists per game. Meanwhile, Julian Reese is grabbing 6.5 rebounds.
Zach Edey’s 20.2 points per game have powered the Boilermakers on offense. Edey also has averaged 12.3 rebounds per game, most in the country. Smith has doled out 4.3 assists per game. The Boilermakers are holding opponents to 60.1 points per game, ranking as one of the toughest scoring defenses in the NCAA (15th).
In the last 10 games, Maryland is 4-6 with an average margin of -3.9 (63.4-67.3). For the season, the Terrapins are averaging 71.1 points per game, compared to 64.5 for opponents.
