Both teams will be out to add to winning streaks when the Providence Friars (9-3, 1-0 Big East) play host to the Marquette Golden Eagles (9-3, 1-0 Big East) on Tuesday. Marquette beat the Creighton Bluejays 69-58 at Fiserv Forum on Friday, their third win in a row. Oso Ighodaro led the way with 16 points.
Providence won their fourth in a row on Saturday at Prudential Center, beating the Seton Hall Pirates 71-67. Bryce Hopkins scored 24 to top the scoresheet. With 21 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, Ed Croswell also impressed.
It’s the only meeting of the season between the teams. Marquette and Providence split their matchups last season, each team taking one. The Friars won the last meeting 65-63 at Amica Mutual Pavilion on January 30. Nate Watson led the Friars with 17 points, while Justin Minaya played a key role with 14 points.
Darryl Morsell had 14 points and six steals in the loss. Kam Jones and Olivier-Maxence Prosper, averaging 15.8 and 15.0 points per game, respectively, have led the Golden Eagles in scoring this season. Meanwhile, Tyler Kolek is dishing 7.8 assists per game, third-most in the country, and Ighodaro is grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game.
Hopkins has supplied much of the Friars’ offense, averaging 15.7 points per game. Hopkins also has averaged 8.6 rebounds per game. Jared Bynum has tallied 4.9 assists per game.
In the last 10 games, Marquette is 7-3 with an average margin of +12.8 (79.7-66.9). Providence has also gone 7-3 over the last 10, scoring 79.9 points per game on average while holding opponents to 67.7 (+12.2 margin).
