The No. 22 Providence Friars (14-4, 6-1 Big East) will try to slow down one of the nation’s top scoring teams when they travel to face the No. 20 Marquette Golden Eagles (14-5, 6-2 Big East) on Wednesday. Providence was defeated by the Creighton Bluejays 73-67 at CHI Health Center Omaha on Saturday.
Bryce Hopkins had a standout performance in the loss with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Friars remain second in the Big East Conference. Marquette fell short on Sunday at Cintas Center, falling to the Xavier Musketeers 80-76. Tyler Kolek had 25 points and seven assists in defeat to lead the team.
The Golden Eagles remain third in the Big East Conference. The teams are meeting for the final time this season. After winning the only previous season matchup against Marquette 103-98 in double overtime at Amica Mutual Pavilion in December 2022, Providence will be seeking a season sweep. Hopkins led the Friars with 29 points and 23 rebounds. Kolek had 29 points and five steals in the losing effort.
The Friars have been led this season by Hopkins, who is averaging 16.2 points per game. Hopkins also has grabbed 9.1 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Jared Bynum is dishing 3.9 assists. Kam Jones (15.8 ppg) and Olivier-Maxence Prosper (14.4) have been the primary providers for the Golden Eagles on offense.
Kolek is recording 7.9 assists per game, third-most in the NCAA, and Oso Ighodaro is averaging 6.4 rebounds per game. The Golden Eagles are one of the top scoring offenses in the nation, ranking 14th with 82.7 points per game.
