Offense meets defense when the No. 7 Texas Longhorns (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) are on the road to face the No. 12 Iowa State Cyclones (13-3, 4-1 Big 12) on Tuesday. Texas squeaked by the Texas Tech Red Raiders 72-70 at Moody Center on Saturday, their third consecutive win. With 20 points, Marcus Carr was the scoring leader.
Sir’Jabari Rice was another key contributor with 18 points. The Longhorns are second in the Big 12 Conference. Iowa State lost a close one on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse, falling to the Kansas Jayhawks 62-60. Gabe Kalscheur had 23 points and six rebounds in the losing effort, carrying the team. The Cyclones slipped to third in the Big 12 Conference.
The teams are meeting for the only time this season. Texas and Iowa State split their matchups last season, each team taking one. The Longhorns came out on top in the last meeting 63-41 at Frank Erwin Special Events Center in February 2022. Andrew Jones led the Longhorns with 14 points.
Izaiah Brockington had 12 points in defeat. The Longhorns have been led this season by Carr, who is averaging 17.5 points per game. Carr also has dished 4.2 assists per game. Meanwhile, Timmy Allen is grabbing 5.5 rebounds.
Jaren Holmes and Kalscheur have supplied much of the Cyclones’ offense, averaging 12.8 and 12.5 points per game, respectively. Aljaz Kunc is collecting 4.1 rebounds per game, and Tamin Lipsey is distributing 4.8 assists.
The Cyclones are the NCAA’s seventh-best team in defensive efficiency, while the Longhorns rank 29th in offensive efficiency. The Longhorns are only 2-8 in their last 10 games at James H. Hilton Coliseum. In the last 10 games, Texas is 9-1 with an average margin of +11.8 (82.4-70.6).
For the season, the Longhorns are averaging 81.5 points per game, compared to 66.0 for opponents. Iowa State has gone 8-2 over the last 10, scoring 69.3 points per game on average while allowing 57.7 (+11.6 margin).
