East Tennessee State @ #18 Tennessee – 12pm ET

East Tennessee State is coming off a heart-breaking loss in their opening game of the season, and now have to get back out their and take on the #18, Tennessee Volunteers. While the Buccaneers suffered defeat in their opener, Tennessee won theirs comfortably and will be hoping for more of the same here.

Denis Kirilov

The 18-seed Tennessee Volunteers will have to face the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in a game on Sunday. The Volunteers started off the season with a convincing 90:62 victory over UT Martin. East Tennessee State, on the other hand, suffered a comeback against Appalachian State who eventually won the game by 2 points. They finished their previous season with a record of 13-12, while Tennessee won 18 out of 26 games and lost to Oregon State in the tournament bracket.

Tennessee’s Kennedy Chandler dropped 20 points for just 22 minutes of play, while Oliver Nkamhoua posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. They can rely on Santiago Vescovi and Josiah-Jordan James who were part of their team last season. Josian-Jordan James also specializes in defense as he managed to put up 5 steals and 4 blocks in Tennessee’ first game during this campaign. East Tennessee State should have troubles stopping Tennessee’s players as I am expecting a double-digit win for the #18-seed that might go beyond the 20-point mark.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Tennessee -16.5 (-115)

Michael Lantz

Tennessee started off their season with a dominant win over Tennessee Martin, beating them 90-62. They were carried by five-star recruit Kennedy Chandler who put up 20 points. Additionally, the Vols had three more players score in double-digits.

Their next opponent is another in-state rival: East Tennessee State. The Buccaneers are already 0-2 on the year and things won’t get easier in Knoxville as #18 Tennessee has a full arsenal ready to attack. Not much to analyze until his one as I expect the home team to run away with a pretty easy victory, especially with the spread at 16.5 against a team that lost to Appalachian St.

Michael’s College Basketball Pick: Tennessee -16.5 (-108)

Tony Battalio

East Tennessee State heads into this interstate matchup with a record of 0-1 following an opening game loss to Appalachian State. It was a game that was close all the way to the final buzzer, but in the end East Tennessee State would lose 69-67. East Tennessee State is one of the more decorated Mid Majors having made six appearances in the NCAA Tournament since 2000. Their last appearance was back in 2017, where they lost in the first round. They did qualify in 2020 however March Madness was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

As for the 18th ranked Tennessee Volunteers they come into this game with a record of 1-0 after opening up the 2021-22 season with a victory over Tennessee-Martin by a score of 90-62. The Volunteers have made the NCAA Tournament each of the last three seasons in which the tournament was actually played. Last year they finished with a record of 18-9 and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament after being upset by the 12th seeded Oregon State Beavers. As for the result of this game, I expect it to be all Tennessee from the opening tip until the final horn. The Volunteers are by far the most talented team on the court, and should have no issue pulling out a huge victory in this one.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Tennessee (-2000)

#20 Florida State @ Florida – 1pm ET

A massive rivalry game sees Florida host Florida State this afternoon. This nationally televised game will see the Gators and Seminoles put their perfect 1-0 records on the line, with the latter looking to justify their #20 ranking.

Denis Kirilov

The rivalry between the two oldest public universities in Florida continues on Sunday when the Florida State University Seminoles will face off the University of Florida Gators. In their head-to-head matches Florida leads 43-29 overall. However, the last seven matches were won by Florida State who were the better team in recent years. Florida State lost to Michigan in the 1/8 finals last year, while Florida was eliminated by Oral Roberts a stage earlier. Scottie Barnes, the best performing rookie in the NBA so far, played exactly for Florida State last season. They have lost not only him, but also players like MJ Walker and RaiQuan Gray.

On the other hand, the Gators also parted ways with several good ballers like Tre Mann who joined the OKC Thunder, Noah Locke who went to play for the Louisville Cardinals, and Scottie Lewis who was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets. Both teams are 1-0 so far in the season as they both had to play against weaker opponents in their first matchday. Everyone expects this to be a spectacle, but many games like this one don’t live up to the hype. I think it will be a tough game with lots of defensive plays and missed shots. Hence, I will go with the option for under 144.5 points.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Under 144.5 (-110)

Michael Lantz

The college basketball universe should be thrilled to have such a marquee rivalry game this early in the season. Florida may not be the powerhouse they’ve been in the past, but they’re still a tournament team that’s thrilled to have two of their best players back for senior campaigns. Colin Castleton and Myreon Jones both scored 18 points to kick off their senior years as Florida defeated Elon earlier in the week.

The Gators will meet their in-state rival Florida State Seminoles on Sunday night—a team which is quite the offensive threat themselves. Florida State smothered Penn 105-70 on Wednesday as they had four players score in double-digits. We only have a sample size of this season, but based on their early performances I expect a lot of offensive firepower in this one. I’ll take the “over.”

Michael’s College Basketball Pick: Over 144.5 (-110)

Tony Battalio

The 20th ranked Florida State Seminoles come into this game with a record of 1-0 after beating the Pennsylvania Quakers by a score of 105-70 in their opening contest. Last season Florida State finished the year ranked 10th in the nation and made a run to the Sweet Sixteen and finished with a record of 18-7 on the year. This season they again look to be one of the top teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference and have potential to make another deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

The Florida Gators come into this one with a record of 1-0 after winning their opening game against Elon, it was much closer than most people expected it to be as the Gators only won by a margin of 13 Points as the final score was 74-61. Last season Florida finished with a record of 15-10 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to 15th seeded Oral Roberts in a huge upset. This will likely be the most competitive game of the Sunday slate and when the final horn sounds, I expect the Florida State Seminoles to pick up a huge win in this rivalry match up.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Florida State (-111)

Canisius @ #23 St Bonaventure – 5pm ET

We round out the day’s schedule with St Bonaventure, the #23 team in the country, hosting Canisius. The Bonnies’ have won their only game they have played this season while the Golden Griffins are winless from their two games, losing both of those by 10+ points.

Denis Kirilov

The Canisius Golden Griffins are off to a 0-2 start to their campaign after losing against Miami (FL) and East Carolina. Both games were lost by a double-digit number and the situation within the team doesn’t look as bright as it was last year. They finished off the 2020/21 NCAA season with 7 wins and 6 losses and took 6th place in the Metro Atlantic Conference.

St. Bonaventure, on the other hand, cruised past their opponents in the regular season last year, finishing 16-4. They surprisingly lost in the bracket to LSU who defeated them by 15 points. The team is eager to make progress this year and they will be looking to make a statement early on. In their first game for the season, they demolished Siena, beating them by 28 points. Their roster remained almost unchanged to the one they had the previous year and Kyle Lofton, Jaren Holmes, and Dominick Welch should be a better and more improved version of themselves. I think this game is going to be a walk in the park for the hosts as I am expecting them to win by a significant margin. However, I will go with the option for over 139.5 points as I am sure that St. Bonaventure’s squad can come close to 90 points in this match.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Over 139.5 (-110)

Michael Lantz

St. Bonaventure has been a dark horse favorite in recent years. The Allegany, NY team is full of offense and looks to continue their run after a big win over Siena earlier in the week. Kyle Lofton put up 17 points and carried the team to a huge 75-47 victory. They’ll look to continue that momentum against a poor Canisius team at home. On paper, this in-state battle should go in St. Bonaventure’s way with ease as Canisius College is 0-2. But unlike a lot of other teams, Canisius College has had some DI competition for their first two matchups losing to Miami and East Carolina. I expect St. Bonaventure will win, but based on their previous competition I’ll pick Canisius to cover.

Michael’s College Basketball Pick: Canisius +19.5 (-104)

Tony Battalio

Canisius has started the season off on the wrong foot as they come into this contest with a record of 0-2, both of their losses however have come to decent basketball schools, Miami and East Carolina. They were uncompetitive in both contests, as the combined final score of both losses totalled to 160-138 as both defeats came by a double digit margin. Canisius  has never seen much success on the basketball court as they have only made four NCAA Tournament appearances in history, the last coming all the way back in 1996.

The 23rd ranked St.Bonaventure Bonnies come into this game with a record of 1-0 after blowing out Siena by a score of 75-47 in their opening contest. Last season St.Bonaventure appeared in the NCAA Tournament, however they were eliminated in the first round by LSU, capping their impressive season off with a record of 16-5 and a Atlantic Ten Conference Tournament victory. As for the result of this contest, I expect it to be all Bonnies in this one, as they should have no issue cruising to another blowout victory and starting their season 2-0.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick:  St. Bonaventure (-2800)
