Texas Southern @ #14 Florida  – 6pm ET

Texas Southern has yet to pick up a victory this season and in this one it will not be much easier as they travel to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators. Florida is having a great year so far as they come into this game at 6-1.

Denis Kirilov

Texas Southern is yet to find their first win this season as they are coming into this game on a 7-game losing streak. This surely has a really demotivating impact on the whole team. On top of that, the Tigers were on a 15-1 run last year, finishing off in 2nd place in the Southwestern Conference with 16 wins and 8 losses. This performance granted them a spot in the bracket during March Madness, but after a victory over Mount St. Mary’s, they lost to Michigan in the 1/32 finals.

The 14th-seeded, Florida, will try to recover from their loss to Oklahoma on Wednesday. They have been 6-0 before this game as they defeated the likes of Florida State and Ohio State. To put it in another perspective, Ohio State managed to outclass the top-seeded, Duke, last week. The Florida Gators definitely have the potential to improve from last year when they barely reached the 1/16 finals, suffering an upset to Oral Roberts. Colin Castleton is the most valuable player for his team averaging 14.7 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game. In my opinion, the Gators are far more experienced and determined than Texas So. and I will suggest picking their spread for this game.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Florida -23.5 (-110)

Texas Southern has to be frustrated with the way this season has gone. They actually managed to make it to the NCAA Tournament last year before being knocked out by Mount St. Mary’s in the opener. Following the tournament run last season, they have since opened this year winless, at they sit at 0-7, including some bad losses along the way.

Florida finally dropped their first game of the year late last week to the Oklahoma Sooners, in a game between two really good teams. They currently sit at 6-1 on the year, and were ranked 14th in last week’s poll. They also have a win over Ohio State that’s sure to look good on the resume after the Buckeyes managed to knock off top-ranked Duke last week.  With the loss, the Gators probably drop a few spots in the newest poll when it’s released, but it won’t be a large drop, and they won’t be dropping this one, either. Led by 6’11”, 240 pound Colin Castleton, look for Florida to just keep the ball in the paint, letting the big man take care of business against a much smaller, outmatched lineup. Feel comfortable taking the Gators and the points in this one.

Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Florida -23.5 (-110)

Texas Southern is having a rough year so far as they come into this game winless through their first seven games on the year. Not only have they failed to record a victory, they have hardly been competitive in the process. All of their games have ended with a margin of defeat by four points or more. Texas State has played two top 25 teams already this season and lost to both by a combined total of 34 points, those losses came to BYU and Oregon. Now they will face their toughest test yet against the Gators in Gainesville on Monday night.

The Florida Gators come into this game having a great season as they are 6-1 so far on the season. Their only loss has come to the Oklahoma Sooners in their last game. They come into this one nationally ranked at 14th in the country. This will be their first home game in an upcoming stretch of four out of their next five at home. As for the results of this game, the Florida Gators should have no problem getting right back into the winners column and improving their record to 7-1 on the year.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Florida (-4500)

Alcorn State @ #15 Houston  – 8pm ET

Alcorn State is having a rough year as they enter this game with the Cougars at 1-6. Houston is 7-1 and looks dead set on making an NCAA Tournament appearance this season.

Denis Kirilov

Alcorn State is off to a moderately good start this season. Although they are 1-6 so far, the team has fought well until the end against a lot better opponents like Southern Illinois, Portland, and Seattle. They even defeated the strong Wisconsin Milwaukee. Their best aspect of the game is their defense. However, their offense struggles a lot as nobody from the team averages more than 8 points per game. I would agree that there is some consistency and balance within the roster, but they will need a leader to follow.

The 15th-seeded, Houston, is looking to continue their fantastic start. The Cougars have won 7 out of their 8 opening games for the season, losing only to Wisconsin. Marcus Sasser averages 17.8 points per game and leads the team with most steals. The 6’8’’ and 230 lbs senior forward for Houston, Fabian White Jr., also performs on a very high level from the start of the campaign as he is with 10.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1 block per game. The Cougars have been quite merciless against weaker teams and I expect to witness another display of masterclass by them. Hence, I will pick Houston’s spread as I think this is the best available option for this match.

Denis’ College Basketball Pick: Houston -33.5 (-110)

Noah Dunlap

This game has the chance to get out of hand in a hurry. The Houston Cougars come into this one as one of the best, if not the best team in the American Athletic Conference, and sit at 7-1 on the year ranked in the top-15. They have a lineup that is extremely balanced between upper and underclassmen, and that balance has shown to be instrumental in the start of the season for them.

Now they bring Alcorn State to Houston, to give the Braves a chance to try to get a ranked upset for a program that desperately needs it. They haven’t had success in terms of results this year, but the competitiveness and fight has been seen all year. They come in at 1-6 on the year, but three of the losses have come by four points or less, and one of the losses was to Gonzaga, who may very well be the best team in the country. Another interesting stat to point out is that Alcorn State is yet to play a game at home this season, as they’ve spent the first seven games on the road, and won’t host a game in Lorman, MS until mid-January. When you have a team that struggles to score, playing its eighth straight game on the road, against a top-15 team, all of this adds up to a game that could see Houston take care of business and try to end it early. Take the Cougars and the points, as there’s nothing Alcorn State is able to throw at them to slow them down in this one.

Noah’s College Basketball Pick: Houston -33.5 (-110)

Tony Battalio

Alcorn State is 1-6 on the year and have not looked impressive at all so far this season. Their lone victory of the season came against Milwaukee back on the 28th of November in a four-point game. They have had a tough go of things this year as three of their games have been separated by 4 points or less. They have a loaded schedule in the month of December that includes games against Oklahoma, Wichita State, Baylor, and Minnesota including this one against the Houston Cougars.

As for the previously mentioned Houston Cougars, they come into this game nationally ranked in and with one loss in their first eight games of the season. Their lone loss of the year came to the Wisconsin Badgers in the semi-finals of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. As for the result of this game, the Houston Cougars should have no problem picking up another home win here with ease. As I look for them to extend their winning streak and extend their record to 8-1 on the year.

Tony’s College Basketball Pick: Houston (-10000)
