La Salle @ #16 Villanova – 6:30PM ET

Unranked La Salle and sixteenth ranked Villanova will open up the season against each other on Monday evening in this Philadelphia big 5 matchup. La Salle is coming off of a rough season, while Villanova made an NCAA tournament appearance.

The La Salle Explorers are coming off of a season where they went 11-19 and had a bit of a down year. They are really struggling in the Atlantic Ten Conference over the last few years as well. They open up this brand new season with a tough test against a top 25 Villanova team and when they faced them last season it didn’t go well. As Villanova picked up an easy victory over La Salle. 

The Villanova Wildcats are coming off a somewhat successful season as they made an NCAA tournament appearance and made it all the way to the Final Four. They finished the year as the Big East champions and with a record of 30-8. They will have a new head coach for the first time in over two decades after Jay Wright retired at the end of last season. I expect them to pick up right where they left off and get an easy win in this game. 

Purdue Fort Wayne @ #22 Michigan – 6:30PM ET

Unranked Purdue Fort Wayne and twenty second ranked Michigan will open up the season against each other on Monday evening. Both of these teams finished last season with winning records but only Michigan made the NCAA tournament. This is a make up game for a cancellation last season.

Purdue Fort Wayne finished last season with a record of 21-12 and as the Horizon League regular season champions. However, they missed out on the NCAA tournament and were eliminated in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational. They were supposed to play Michigan last season but it was canceled due to COVID-19 complications within the program. 

The Michigan Wolverines are coming into this season ranked 22nd in the nation. Last season they finished the year with a record of 19-15 and qualified for the NCAA tournament. However, they performed well below the expectations that were set for them. As they struggled in a very competitive Big Ten Conference. They did make a solid run to the Sweet Sixteen that they will be looking to build off of as well. I expect them to grab an easy victory in this game. 

Morehead State @ #13 Indiana – 7PM ET

Unranked Morehead State and thirteenth ranked Indiana will open up the season against each other on Monday evening. Both of these teams finished last season with winning records but only the Hoosiers made the NCAA tournament.

Morehead State is coming into this game looking to grab a top 25 upset win to open up the 2022-23 college basketball season. Last season they finished the year with a record of 23-11 and with a 13-5 record in the Ohio Valley Conference. However, they missed the NCAA tournament after losing to Murray State in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship. 

The Indiana Hoosiers come into this season ranked in the top 25 teams in the country. They open up the season as the 13th team in the nation. The Hoosiers finished last season with a record of 21-14 and qualified for the NCAA tournament. However, they were eliminated in the first round of the tournament by Saint Mary’s. They really struggled on the road last season but I expect them to grab the win here at home. 

FAMU @ #21 Oregon – 10PM ET

Unranked Florida A&M and twenty first ranked Oregon will open up the season against each other on Monday evening. Both of these teams missed the NCAA tournament last season despite finishing with winning records.

The Rattlers of Florida A&M finished last season with a record of 13-17 as they struggled outside of conference play. They will be looking to improve in that category when they open up the season against the 21st ranked Oregon Ducks. This is a program that hasn’t made the NCAA tournament in a decade and a half. As they will be looking to finally take that next step and qualify for the big dance. 

The Oregon Ducks come into this game ranked twenty first in the nation to open up the season. Last year they finished with a record of 20-15, however they failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament. As they struggled in Pac-12 conference play and finished with a record of 11-9. They did qualify for the National Invitational Tournament but were bounced in the second round. I have them getting the win to open up the season. 

Sacramento State @ #8 UCLA – 11:30PM ET

Unranked Sacramento State and eighth ranked UCLA will open up the season against each other on Monday evening. Sacramento State finished last year with a losing record, while UCLA made a run to the Sweet Sixteen.

Sacramento State comes into this season unranked after finishing last season with a record of 11-18 after a rough season in conference play. They will be looking to bounce back after a tough year as they open up the season against a top ten UCLA team. They struggled on the road last season and I don’t think they will have an easier time in this one either. 

 The UCLA Bruins come into this game ranked eighth in the country. They made a run to the NCAA tournament last season but were eliminated in the Sweet Sixteen. The Bruins finished the year with a record of 27-8 and with a 15-5 record in the pac-12 during regular season play. I have the Bruins getting the win in this one to open the year.
