The San Diego Padres (23-27) take one of the weakest offenses in the National League on the road to face the New York Yankees (30-22) at Yankee Stadium on Friday to open a three-game Interleague series. The Padres are in the midst of a nine-game road trip.
They won two out of three in their last series against the Nationals, taking the finale 8-6 on Thursday at Nationals Park. Juan Soto was 1 for 1 with four walks and two runs. Rougned Odor added a home run and a double. He had five RBIs.
The Yankees are in the midst of a six-game homestand. They lost two of three against the Orioles in their last series, dropping the finale 3-1 on Thursday at Yankee Stadium.
Willie Calhoun went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI.The teams are meeting for the first time since May 29, 2019, when the Yankees finished off a 2-1 series win with a 7-0 victory at Yankee Stadium.
ON THE MOUND
Joe Musgrove (1-2, 6.75 ERA) is in line to take the mound for San Diego. The righty allowed four runs over five innings in his last start, a 4-2 road defeat against the Red Sox on Saturday.
He was charged with the loss, scattering six hits while striking out six and walking one. For New York, RHP Randy Vasquez is on the mound, his season debut.
AT THE PLATE
The San Diego offense is averaging 4.0 runs per game for the season, second lowest in the National League, with a slash line of .224/.316/.387.
Soto leads the team in OPS at .917. The right fielder is slashing .262/.423/.494 with nine home runs, 22 RBIs, and 29 runs over 50 games. Over the last five games, however, San Diego has averaged 5.4 runs a game due in part to greater slugging (.457).

The Yanks have a .724 OPS against right-handers in 2023. With a 1.127 OPS over 118 at-bats, Judge also has been their best hitter against right-handers.
