The No. 6 Virginia Cavaliers (17-3, 9-2 ACC), one of the nation’s top scoring defenses, travel to face the Virginia Tech Hokies (13-9, 3-8 ACC) on Saturday. Virginia defeated the Syracuse Orange 67-62 at JMA Wireless Dome on Monday, their seventh win in a row. Jayden Gardner was the standout player with 17 points and eight rebounds. The Cavaliers remain second in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Virginia Tech lost on Tuesday at Watsco Center, falling to the Miami (FL) Hurricanes 92-83. Hunter Cattoor had 20 points in the losing effort to lead the team. The Hokies remain 12th in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
It’s the last meeting of the season between the teams. Virginia will be looking for a season sweep against Virginia Tech after coming out on top in the only prior matchup 78-68 at John Paul Jones Arena on January 18. Kihei Clark led the Cavaliers with 20 points. Darius Maddox had 13 points in the loss.
The Cavaliers have been led this season by Armaan Franklin and Clark, who are averaging 13.1 and 11.4 points per game, respectively. Clark also has dished 6.1 assists per game, eighth-most in the country.
Meanwhile, Gardner is grabbing 4.9 rebounds per game. Sean Pedulla and Grant Basile have powered the Hokies on offense, averaging 15.7 and 14.9 points per game, respectively.
Justyn Mutts is averaging 7.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. The Cavaliers rank as one of the stingiest scoring defenses in the nation, ninth-best with 60.2 points per game allowed. The Cavaliers are 6-4 in the last 10 games at Cassell Coliseum.
Virginia is 9-1 in the last 10 games with an average margin of +10.1 (70.7-60.6). Virginia Tech has a 2-8 record over the last 10, allowing 73.6 points per game on average while scoring only 71.0 (-2.6 margin). The Hokies are averaging 73.9 ppg for the full season while allowing 67.5.
