The No. 13 Tennessee Volunteers (6-1), one of the nation’s top scoring defenses, play host to the Alcorn State Braves (3-5) on Sunday. Alcorn State lost to the Grand Canyon Antelopes 80-72 at Grand Canyon University Arena on Tuesday, their fourth consecutive loss away from home. Byron Joshua was a top performer in defeat with 30 points.
Tennessee won their fifth in a row in dominant fashion on Wednesday at Thompson-Boling Arena, beating the McNeese State Cowboys 76-40. Santiago Vescovi scored 16 points to lead the team in scoring. With 12 points, Julian Phillips also played a part.
The Braves have been led this season by Dominic Brewton and Joshua, who are averaging 11.6 and 11.6 points per game, respectively. Joshua also has dished 2.6 assists per game. Meanwhile, Jeremiah Kendall is grabbing 5.8 rebounds per game.
Vescovi (12.0 ppg), Phillips (10.9), and Tyreke Key (10.7) have been the primary providers for the Volunteers on offense. Phillips also has collected 5.3 rebounds per game, while Vescovi has recorded 3.4 assists per game. The Volunteers are one of the top scoring defenses in the nation, ranking seventh with 53.1 points per game allowed.
