The Virginia Cavaliers (24-6, 16-5 ACC) face the Clemson Tigers (23-9, 15-6 ACC) Friday at Greensboro Coliseum in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tourney semifinals. Clemson dominated the North Carolina State Wolfpack 80-54 at Greensboro Coliseum yesterday in the quarterfinals.
Ian Schieffelin had a standout performance with 15 points. Virginia won their third in a row in the quarterfinals yesterday at Greensboro Coliseum, beating the North Carolina Tar Heels 68-59. Jayden Gardner led the team in scoring with 17 points. With 15 points and five steals, Reece Beekman also produced a strong performance.
Virginia won the only game against Clemson this season 64-57 at John Paul Jones Arena on February 28. Armaan Franklin, Isaac McKneely, and Jayden Gardner led the Cavaliers with 12 points apiece, while Beekman was a key contributor with 7 points and eight assists. PJ Hall had 19 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
Hunter Tyson and Hall, averaging 15.5 and 15.0 points per game, respectively, have led the Tigers in scoring this season. Tyson also has grabbed 9.6 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Chase Hunter is dishing 4.2 assists per game.
Franklin (12.6 ppg), Gardner (11.9), and Kihei Clark (11.0) have powered the Cavaliers’ offense. Gardner also has averaged 5.6 rebounds per game, while Clark has distributed 5.6 assists per game. Holding opponents to 60.4 points per game, the Cavaliers are one of the toughest scoring defenses in the country (8th).
