The St. John’s Red Storm (17-12, 7-11 Big East) will try to overcome one of the top scoring defenses in the Big East Conference when they welcome the No. 18 UConn Huskies (21-7, 10-7 Big East) on Saturday. UConn dismantled the Providence Friars 87-69 at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday.
Jordan Hawkins was the top scorer with 20 points. Adama Sanogo chipped in with 16 points and three blocks. The Huskies remain fifth in the Big East Conference. St. John’s found victory on Wednesday at Capital One Arena, beating the Georgetown Hoyas 79-70. Joel Soriano had 16 points to lead the team.
The Red Storm are eighth in the Big East Conference. The teams are meeting for the final time this season. St. John’s will be aiming for a season sweep against UConn after coming out on top in the only previous meeting 85-74 at XL Center on January 15. Soriano led the Red Storm with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Hawkins had 31 points in the loss.
The Huskies have been led this season by Sanogo and Hawkins, who are averaging 16.8 and 15.3 points per game, respectively. Sanogo also has grabbed 7.2 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Tristen Newton is dishing 4.4 assists per game. Soriano’s 15.4 points per game have powered the Red Storm on offense. Soriano also has averaged 11.9 rebounds per game, third-most in the country.
Posh Alexander has tallied 3.9 assists per game. The Huskies are holding opponents to 64.5 points per game, ranking as one of the stingiest scoring defenses in the conference (2nd). In the last 10 games, UConn is 6-4 with an average margin of +7.4 (75.4-68.0).
For the season, the Huskies are averaging 78.4 points per game, compared to 64.5 for opponents. St. John’s has a 4-6 record over the last 10, allowing 78.0 points per game on average while scoring only 72.0 (-6.0 margin). The Red Storm are averaging 76.8 ppg for the full season while allowing 74.3.
