It figures to be a high-scoring affair when the Iowa Hawkeyes (15-8, 7-5 Big 10) head to face the No. 1 Purdue Boilermakers (22-2, 11-2 Big 10) on Thursday. Iowa edged past the Illinois Fighting Illini 81-79 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday, their third win in a row. Tony Perkins led the way with 32 points.
The Hawkeyes slipped to seventh in the Big Ten Conference. Purdue fell short on Saturday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, falling to the Indiana Hoosiers 79-74. Zach Edey had 33 points, 18 rebounds, and three blocks in the losing effort, carrying the team. The Boilermakers are first in the Big Ten Conference.
This is the only meeting of the season between the teams. They last met in the Big Ten Tourney Championship when the Hawkeyes clinched the title with a 75-66 victory at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in March 2022. Purdue won both regular season games between the teams last season, the last of which was a 66-75 triumph at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in March 2022.
Keegan Murray led the Hawkeyes with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jaden Ivey had 20 points in the losing effort. Kris Murray is averaging 17.7 points per game to lead the Hawkeyes in scoring this season. Meanwhile, Filip Rebraca is grabbing 8.2 rebounds per game, and Connor McCaffery is dishing 2.9 assists.
Edey has supplied much of the Boilermakers’ offense, averaging 21.5 points per game. He has the eighth-best scoring average in the NCAA. Edey also has posted 12.6 rebounds per game, most in the country.
Braden Smith has recorded 4.4 assists per game. The Boilermakers and the Hawkeyes are two of the top offenses in the nation, ranking seventh and 12th in offensive efficiency, respectively.
In the last 10 games, Iowa is 7-3 with an average margin of +4.3 (81.8-77.5). For the season, the Hawkeyes are averaging 81.5 points per game, compared to 73.5 for opponents. Purdue has a 9-1 record over the last 10, scoring 70.9 points per game on average while allowing 61.4 (+9.5 margin).
