The No. 14 Gonzaga Bulldogs (17-4, 6-1 WCC), the nation’s top scoring team, are on the road to face the Portland Pilots (11-11, 3-4 WCC) on Saturday.
Gonzaga topped the Pacific Tigers 99-90 at Spanos Center on Saturday, their fourth consecutive win away from home. Drew Timme led the way with 38 points.
The Bulldogs remain second in the West Coast Conference. Portland won their third straight home game on Saturday at Earle A. Chiles Center, beating the Pepperdine Waves 91-76. Moses Wood topped the scoresheet with 17 points.
With 16 points and seven assists, Tyler Robertson also played a part. The Pilots are seventh in the West Coast Conference.It’s the final meeting of the season between the teams.
Gonzaga will be seeking a season sweep against Portland after triumphing in the only earlier game 115-75 at McCarthey Athletic Center on January 14, their 15th straight head-to-head victory. Malachi Smith led the Bulldogs with 27 points and eight rebounds. Wood had 19 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
The Bulldogs have been led this season by Timme, who is averaging 22.0 points per game, fourth-highest in the NCAA. Timme also has grabbed 7.6 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Nolan Hickman is dishing 3.7 assists.
Wood (14.8 ppg), Robertson (14.6), and Kristian Sjolund (13.0) have been the primary providers of the Pilots’ offense. Wood also has pulled down 6.0 rebounds per game, while Robertson has distributed 5.5 assists per game. The Bulldogs are the most explosive offense in the country with 86.5 points per game.
The Bulldogs are an impressive 8-1 in their last 10 visits to Earle A. Chiles Center. In the last 10 games, Gonzaga is 9-1 with an average margin of +17.7 (93.0-75.3). For the season, the Bulldogs are averaging 86.5 points per game, compared to 73.7 for opponents.
