The No. 5 Kansas State Wildcats (17-2, 6-1 Big 12) will try to overcome one of the nation’s top scoring defenses when they are on the road to face the No. 12 Iowa State Cyclones (14-4, 5-2 Big 12) on Tuesday. Kansas State defeated the Texas Tech Red Raiders 68-58 at Fred Bramlage Coliseum on Saturday.
Markquis Nowell was the key player with 23 points and eight rebounds. The Wildcats remain first in the Big 12 Conference. Iowa State lost a close one on Saturday at Gallagher-Iba Arena, falling to the Oklahoma State Cowboys 61-59. Osun Osunniyi had 15 points and three blocks in the losing effort to lead the team.
The Cyclones slipped to third in the Big 12 Conference.The teams are meeting for the only time this season. Kansas State and Iowa State split their matchups last season, taking one game apiece. The Cyclones took the last meeting 74-73 at Fred Bramlage Coliseum in February 2022. Nijel Pack led both teams in scoring with 32 points in the loss.
Caleb Grill had 18 points for the Cyclones, while Tyrese Hunter played a key role with 13 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds. The Wildcats have been led this season by Keyontae Johnson and Nowell, who are averaging 18.5 and 16.7 points per game, respectively. Johnson also has grabbed 7.4 rebounds per game, while Nowell has dished 8.2 assists per game, second-most in the country.
Jaren Holmes (12.9 ppg) and Gabe Kalscheur (12.8) have been the primary providers for the Cyclones on offense. Grill is averaging 4.1 rebounds per game, and Tamin Lipsey is doling out 4.8 assists. The Cyclones are one of the top scoring defenses in the nation, ranking eighth with 58.6 points per game allowed.
