The No. 12 Gonzaga Bulldogs (18-4, 7-1 WCC), the NCAA’s top scoring team, play host to the Santa Clara Broncos (16-7, 4-4 WCC) on Thursday. Santa Clara dropped their last game against the Pacific Tigers 95-89 at Leavey Center on Saturday. Brandin Podziemski was the standout player in the loss with 38 points and nine rebounds.
The Broncos remain fourth in the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga got the win on Saturday at Earle A. Chiles Center, beating the Portland Pilots 82-67. Julian Strawther had 40 points and six rebounds, leading the team. The Bulldogs remain second in the West Coast Conference.
This marks the final meeting of the season between the teams. Gonzaga will be seeking a season sweep against Santa Clara after taking the only previous matchup 81-76 at Leavey Center on January 7, their 23rd straight head-to-head victory.
Nolan Hickman led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Keshawn Justice had 22 points in the losing effort. Podziemski is averaging 19.0 points per game to lead the Broncos in scoring this season. Podziemski also is contributing 8.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Drew Timme (21.4 ppg) has supplied much of the Bulldogs’ offense.
He has the ninth-best scoring average in the nation. Timme also has posted 7.5 rebounds per game. Hickman has doled out 3.5 assists per game.With 86.3 points per game, the Bulldogs are the most explosive offense in the country.
The Broncos have not found any success at McCarthey Athletic Center in recent seasons, winless in the last 10 trips. Santa Clara is 6-4 in the last 10 games with an average margin of +3.1 (77.4-74.3).
Gonzaga has gone 9-1 over the last 10, scoring 91.2 points per game on average while holding opponents to 73.0 (+18.2 margin). The Bulldogs are averaging 86.3 ppg for the full season while allowing 73.4.
