The No. 12 Gonzaga Bulldogs (23-5, 12-2 WCC), the nation’s top scoring team, welcome the San Diego Toreros (11-17, 4-10 WCC) on Thursday. San Diego was edged out by the Saint Mary’s Gaels 62-59 at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday, their third straight loss.
Nic Lynch was a top performer in the losing effort with 17 points. The Toreros remain ninth in the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga won their fourth in a row on Saturday at Firestone Fieldhouse, beating the Pepperdine Waves 97-88.
Drew Timme had 34 points and seven rebounds, leading the team. The Bulldogs are second in the West Coast Conference. The teams are meeting for the only time this season.
Gonzaga came out on top in the only matchup between the teams last season 92-62 at Jenny Craig Pavilion in February 2022, their 15th straight head-to-head victory. Chet Holmgren led the Bulldogs with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks. Jase Townsend had 13 points in defeat.
The Toreros have been led this season by Marcellus Earlington, who is averaging 17.6 points per game. Meanwhile, Eric Williams Jr. is grabbing 9.5 rebounds per game, and Sigu Sisoho Jawara is dishing 3.0 assists.Timme (21.3 ppg) has powered the Bulldogs on offense.
Timme also has pulled down 7.3 rebounds per game. Nolan Hickman has distributed 3.3 assists per game. With 87.5 points per game, the Bulldogs are the top scoring offense in the nation.
The Toreros have struggled immensely in recent visits to McCarthey Athletic Center, losing each of the last 10. In the last 10 games, San Diego is 3-7 with an average margin of -4.4 (80.3-84.7).
