The No. 16 Gonzaga Bulldogs (20-5, 9-2 WCC), the NCAA’s top scoring team, play host to the BYU Cougars (16-11, 6-6 WCC) on Saturday. BYU was defeated by the Pepperdine Waves 92-80 at Firestone Fieldhouse on Thursday, their third straight loss away from home.
Fousseyni Traore had a standout performance in the loss with 19 points. The Cougars remain fifth in the West Coast Conference.
Gonzaga won in impressive fashion on Thursday at McCarthey Athletic Center, beating the San Francisco Dons 99-81. Rasir Bolton had 23 points and six assists to lead the team.
The Bulldogs are second in the West Coast Conference. This is the last meeting of the season between the teams. After winning the only earlier season game against BYU 75-74 at Marriott Center on January 12, their sixth straight head-to-head victory, Gonzaga will be seeking a season sweep.
Drew Timme led the Bulldogs with 19 points, while Anton Watson was a key contributor with 18 points and nine rebounds. Spencer Johnson had 18 points, six rebounds, and five steals in the losing effort. Traore (12.8 ppg), Rudi Williams (12.2), and Gideon George (11.3) are leading the Cougars in scoring this season.
Traore also has grabbed 8.1 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Dallin Hall is dishing 3.2 assists per game. Timme (21.2 ppg) has powered the Bulldogs on offense. He has the 10th-best scoring average in the NCAA.
Timme also has collected 7.4 rebounds per game. Nolan Hickman has doled out 3.3 assists per game. With 86.2 points per game, the Bulldogs are the top scoring offense in the NCAA. The Cougars are 3-7 in their last 10 games at McCarthey Athletic Center.
