The No. 18 UConn Huskies (20-7, 9-7 Big East), the top scoring defense in the Big East Conference, welcome the No. 20 Providence Friars (20-7, 12-4 Big East) on Wednesday. Providence beat the Villanova Wildcats 85-72 at Amica Mutual Pavilion on Saturday.
Ed Croswell was the leading scorer with 21 points. Bryce Hopkins was another standout performer with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Friars dropped to third in the Big East Conference.
UConn were victorious on Saturday at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, beating the Seton Hall Pirates 64-55. Jordan Hawkins recorded 20 points to lead the team in scoring. With 15 points and 10 rebounds, Andre Jackson Jr. also produced a strong performance. The Huskies are fifth in the Big East Conference.
The teams are meeting for the last time this season. Providence will be seeking a season sweep against UConn after taking the only prior game 73-61 at Amica Mutual Pavilion on January 4. Hopkins led the Friars with 27 points. Hawkins had 15 points in the losing effort.
The Friars have been led this season by Hopkins, who is averaging 16.9 points per game. Hopkins also has grabbed 9.3 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Jared Bynum is dishing 3.9 assists.
Adama Sanogo (16.9 ppg) and Hawkins (15.1) have supplied much of the Huskies’ offense. Sanogo also has posted 7.3 rebounds per game. Tristen Newton has doled out 4.3 assists per game. The Huskies rank as the stingiest scoring defense in the Big East with 64.3 points per game allowed.
