The No. 25 San Diego State Aztecs (18-5, 9-2 MWC) will try to slow down one of the nation’s top scoring teams when they are on the road to face the Utah State Aggies (19-5, 8-3 MWC) on Wednesday.
San Diego State dismantled the Boise State Broncos 72-52 at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl on Friday. Nathan Mensah was a top performer with 17 points. The Aztecs remain first in the Mountain West Conference.
Utah State won their third in a row on Saturday at Moby Arena, beating the Colorado State Rams 88-79. Steven Ashworth had 26 points, leading the team. The Aggies remain second in the Mountain West Conference.
It’s the last meeting of the season between the teams. After winning the only prior season meeting against Utah State 85-75 at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl on January 25, San Diego State will be pursuing a season sweep. Adam Seiko led the Aztecs with 25 points.
Taylor Funk had 22 points in the losing effort. Matt Bradley is averaging 12.8 points per game to lead the Aztecs in scoring this season. Meanwhile, Mensah is grabbing 5.9 rebounds per game, and Darrion Trammell is dishing 3.6 assists. Ashworth (15.9 ppg) and Funk (14.3) have been the primary providers for the Aggies on offense.
Ashworth also has doled out 4.5 assists per game. Dan Akin has posted 7.5 rebounds per game. With 80.4 points per game, the Aggies are one of the highest-scoring offenses in the country (23rd).
San Diego State is 8-2 in the last 10 games with an average margin of +7.2 (74.4-67.2). Utah State has gone 7-3 over the last 10, scoring 75.6 points per game on average while holding opponents to 73.0 (+2.6 margin). The Aggies are averaging 80.4 ppg for the full season while allowing 71.4.
