The No. 6 Gonzaga Bulldogs (16-3, 5-0 WCC), the NCAA’s top scoring team, play host to the Loyola Marymount Lions (13-7, 3-3 WCC) on Thursday.
Loyola Marymount beat the San Diego Toreros 98-84 at Albert Gersten Pavilion on Saturday. With 28 points and seven assists, Cam Shelton led the way.
The Lions remain sixth in the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga won their 11th in a row in dominating fashion on Saturday at McCarthey Athletic Center, beating the Portland Pilots 115-75. Malachi Smith had 27 points and eight rebounds to lead the team. The Bulldogs dropped to second in the West Coast Conference.
It’s the only meeting of the season between the teams. Gonzaga triumphed in the only game between the teams last season 89-55 at McCarthey Athletic Center in January 2022, their 20th straight head-to-head victory.
Chet Holmgren led the Bulldogs with 21 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. Keli Leaupepe had 12 points and eight rebounds in the loss.Shelton is averaging 18.5 points per game to lead the Lions in scoring this season.
Shelton also has dished 4.6 assists per game. Meanwhile, Leaupepe is grabbing 6.9 rebounds. Drew Timme (21.5 ppg) has been the primary provider for the Bulldogs on offense. He ranks as the eighth-highest scorer in the NCAA. Timme also has posted 7.8 rebounds per game. Nolan Hickman has recorded 3.6 assists per game.
The Bulldogs are averaging 86.9 points per game, ranking as the top scoring offense in the country. The Lions are winless in their last 10 trips to McCarthey Athletic Center. Loyola Marymount is 6-4 in the last 10 games with an average margin of +3.2 (74.0-70.8).
