SportsTips’ NFL Power Rankings: Week 8

SportsTips’ NFL Power Rankings: Week 8
Tue 27th October 2020

The Giants and the Eagles kicked off Week 7 of the NFL with a 22-21 Thursday night thriller, as Daniel Jones 80-yard run (and face plant) failed to get New York over the line. The Patriots are now off to their worst start to the season since 2000 and as the Seahawks and Titans suffered losses, Pittsburgh remain the only undefeated team in the league.

Here’s where all 32 NFL teams stand ahead of Week 8 of the 2020 NFL season.

1. Kansas City Chiefs (6-1)

Super Bowl Odds: +400
Previous Rank: 1

After showing how well they could run the football last week, the Chiefs flexed their muscles on defense and special teams in Week 7, dismantling the Broncos 43-16. Kansas City are proving to be the best and most well rounded team in football, destroying opponents without leaning heavily on Patrick Mahomes. With a Week 8 matchup against the Jets to look forward to, the Chiefs will be 7-1 at this time next week and will remain the top team in the NFL.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-0)

Super Bowl Odds: +1000
Previous Rank: 3

It wasn’t pretty but the Steelers got it done to remain the only undefeated team in the NFL. A three-point victory against the previously undefeated Titans was the first of back to back AFC matchups for the Steelers, who are set to face off against the Ravens in a blockbuster Week 8 fixture.

3. Seattle Seahawks (5-1)

Super Bowl Odds: +900
Previous Rank: 2

Despite throwing three interceptions, Russell Wilson was still phenomenal in Seattle’s matchup against the Cardinals throwing for 388 yards and three touchdowns. However, the Seahawks defense has lots of problems and it showed on Sunday night, allowing 519 yards. After suffering their first loss of the season, Seattle are now back with the pack and have plenty to improve on.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-2)

Super Bowl Odds: +700
Previous Rank: 4

A big win for the Bucs and a big loss for the Pats, life is good for Tom Brady. Tampa Bay look to have worked out their offensive balance with so many different avenues to the end zone. Hopefully the addition of Antonio Brown does not disrupt what is happening in Tampa Bay, who are currently looking like the in form team in the NFC.

5. Baltimore Ravens (5-1)

Super Bowl Odds: +550
Previous Rank: 7

The Ravens enjoyed a Week 7 bye, however still managed to add star outside line-backer Yannick Ngakoue to their already loaded defense. A Week 8 division matchup against the Steelers is shaping up to be one of the biggest games of the season. A Ravens loss could see Pittsburgh run away with the AFC North division.

6. Green Bay Packers (5-1)

Super Bowl Odds: +1000
Previous Rank: 5

Aaron Rodgers bounced back in the Packers Week 7 victory over the Texans, slinging four touchdowns in the 35-20 win. The 28-point Week 6 loss to Tampa Bay is going to haunt Green Bay for some time as the Packers look to claim another big scalp and announce themselves as one of the best teams in the league. Until then, they can and should continue to beat bad teams.

7. Tennessee Titans  (5-1)

Super Bowl Odds: +2000
Previous Rank: 6

The Titans won the second half 17-3 and were a straight Stephen Gostkowski field goal off forcing overtime in their undefeated matchup against the Steelers. However, after giving up 24 first half points, the damage had already been done. Tennessee still sits a game clear in the AFC South division, and should get back on the winners list with a Week 8 matchup against the Bengals.

8. Buffalo Bills (5-2)

Super Bowl Odds: +2000
Previous Rank: 8

The Bills improved to 5-2, however their eight-point victory over the Jets was far from convincing. Buffalo sits on top of the AFC East division ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the 2-4 Patriots, a huge game for both teams.

9. New Orleans Saints (4-2)

Super Bowl Odds: +1400
Previous Rank: 9

Drew Brees led New Orleans home with his 52nd career game winning drive to give the Saints a 27-24 victory over Carolina. Still lots of question marks surrounding the Saints, however the wins keep coming. A Week 9 matchup against the Bucs will be a great test in a fortnight’s time.

10. Arizona Cardinals (5-2)

Super Bowl Odds: +2800
Previous Rank: 14

The Cardinals banked their second big division win with their overtime victory over the Seahawks on Sunday night. Defensively, Budda Baker is mounting a Defensive Player of the Year case. While offensively, Kyler Murray is in complete control and looking better every week. Having recorded three straight wins as they enter their Week 8 bye, the Cardinals are looking really solid at this point of the season.

11. Los Angeles Rams (5-2)

Super Bowl Odds: +2500
Previous Rank: 12

The Rams 24-10 victory against the Bears on Monday Night Football makes the race for the NFC West really interesting. Punter Johnny Hekker was incredible, not allowing the Bears strong field position with five kicks landing inside the Bears 20-yard line.

12. San Francisco 49’ers (4-3)

Super Bowl Odds: +2500
Previous Rank: 15

Given the issues that the Patriots are currently facing, a 33-6 victory against New England may not mean as much as we first thought. Nonetheless, San Francisco looks to be back in playoff contention. Two very impressive victories ahead of their division matchup against the Seahawks that could see them equal Seattle on five wins.

13. Chicago Bears (5-2)

Super Bowl Odds: +3300
Previous Rank: 11

The Bears offense was finally undone in their 10-24 loss to the Rams on Monday Night Football. The Rams forced Nick Foles into poor field position resulting in two interceptions from the Bears quarterback. Chicago’s defense was impressive again scoring the team’s only touchdown.

14. Cleveland Browns (5-2)

Super Bowl Odds: +4000
Previous Rank: 13

A 20-14 last quarter led Cleveland to a three-point victory over the Bengals. Baker Mayfield threw five touchdowns in what could prove to be the breakout performance that 25-year-old needed. Yes, it was only the Bengals but that was a great Browns win. Mayfield’s one interception did cost Odell Beckham Jnr his season, after the wide receiver ruptured his ACL while trying to stop a defensive touchdown.

15. Indianapolis Colts (4-2)

Super Bowl Odds: +3000
Previous Rank: 16

Coming off their Week 7 bye the Colts now only sit one win off top spot in the AFC South as a result of the Titans loss to Pittsburgh.

16. Las Vegas Raiders (3-3)

Super Bowl Odds: +6600
Previous Rank: 10

The Raiders Week 6 victory against the Chiefs now feels like a lifetime ago, after the Bucs came to Las Vegas and easily defeated the Raiders 45-20. Running back Josh Jacobs needs to start picking up more first downs to take the pressure off their struggling defense.

17. Los Angeles Chargers (2-4)

Super Bowl Odds: +10000
Previous Rank: 20

Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert continues to impress, throwing for 347 yards and three touchdowns in his first victory as a starter. A 10 point win over Jacksonville is no reason to buy Super Bowl tickets, however it is a great stepping stone for this young talented team.

18. Miami Dolphins (3-3)

Super Bowl Odds: +10000
Previous Rank: 19

During their bye week, the Dolphins officially named the number five overall pick in the 2020 draft, Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback, despite the solid play of veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. Tagovailoa’s first game as the starting QB will be against the ferocious Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams.

19. Detroit Lions (3-3)

Super Bowl Odds: +10000
Previous Rank: 25

An accidental Falcons touchdown allowed Detroit to take control of the ball late in the game and win their matchup against Atlanta 23-22. The Lions are 2-0 since their bye week and now 3-1 away from home. Matt Patricia may have bought himself a little more time to get things going in Detroit.

20. Carolina Panthers (3-4)

Super Bowl Odds: +15000
Previous Rank: 18

Drew Brees sunk Carolina with a game winning drive to snatch the game 27-24. Teddy Bridgewater and the Panthers are continuing to show promise, however the Panthers are feeling the effects of not having Christian McCaffrey late in close games.

21. New England Patriots (2-4)

Super Bowl Odds: +8000
Previous Rank: 17

Having now registered their worst start to a season since 2000, it’s safe to say that the Patriots are missing Tom Brady. Newton and Stidham combined for 162 yards and four interceptions in the Patriots embarrassing 6-33 defeat against San Francisco. Meanwhile Tom Brady is 5-2 with the second most touchdowns in the league.

22. Philadelphia Eagles (2-4-1)

Super Bowl Odds: +4000
Previous Rank: 23

A late comeback against the Giants on Thursday Night Football may have saved the Eagles season. Someone has to win the NFC East division and the Eagles are the most equipped to do so. Carson Wentz threw two touchdowns and 359 yards in Philadelphia’s one point victory. With another division matchup in Week 8 against the Cowboys, the Eagles can stake their claim as the best team in the NFC East; whatever that means.

23. Cincinnati Bengals (1-5-1)

Super Bowl Odds: +50000
Previous Rank: 26

Joe Burrow is a star. However, three touchdowns and 406 yards still couldn’t get it done against the Browns on Sunday. Bengals fans should be optimistic for their future, but there is a long way to go.

24. Denver Broncos (2-4)

Super Bowl Odds: +25000
Previous Rank: 22

After a big win against the Patriots, Denver came back to reality following a 16-43 loss to the Chiefs. The Broncos will get a much better look at where they’re at following their Week 8 matchup against the Chargers. Drew Lock is missing Courtland Sutton, throwing two interceptions against the Chiefs.

25. Washington Football Team (1-5)

Super Bowl Odds: +30000
Previous Rank: 31

Washington embarrassed Dallas in their 25-3 victory on Sunday as Kyle Allen impressed with 194 yards and two touchdowns. However, the result is more of an indication of how bad the Cowboys are. Washington can claim top spot in the NFC East with a victory over the Giants in Week 8.

26. Atlanta Falcons (1-6)

Super Bowl Odds: +50000
Previous Rank: 27

The most Atlanta loss of all time. An accidental touchdown that gave Detroit the football in the dying stages of the game followed by the Falcons defense allowing the Lions to score on their final drive. An offense with Matt Ryan, Julio Jones, Todd Gurley and Calvin Ridley deserves to be better than 1-6

27. Houston Texans (1-6)

Super Bowl Odds: +20000
Previous Rank: 24

The Texans gave up 30+ points for the fifth time this season in their Week 7 loss to the Packers. Deshaun Watson is trying to make plays in an offense that is desperate for more weapons, however their defense cannot keep them in games.

28. Dallas Cowboys (2-4)

Super Bowl Odds: +8000
Previous Rank: 21

Injury riddled or not, giving up 25 points to Kyle Allen and the Washington Football Team is nothing shy of demoralising. An interception and a concussion was enough to end Andy Dalton’s afternoon and bring third stringer Ben DiNucci in at quarterback. The NFC East somehow gets worse every week, as Dallas remarkably has the chance to regain top spot in Week 8 if they can muster a win over the Eagles…but we wouldn’t hold our breath.

29. Minnesota Vikings (1-5)

Super Bowl Odds: +20000
Previous Rank: 28

A Week 7 bye came at the perfect time for the Vikings who limped into their week off at 1-5. The Vikings will face up against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers in Week 8, in a match that will either spark their season, or confirm their place at the bottom of the NFC North division.

30. New York Giants (1-6)

Super Bowl Odds: +50000
Previous Rank: 29

Never has one play summed up a game more than Daniel Jones face planting under no pressure after his 80-yard run. Late in the game Philadelphia drove the field in the final minute and stole the 22-21 victory and top spot in the division. Jones and the Giants have looked much better in the past two weeks however now sit at the bottom of the NFC East division with one win (and still only a game off top spot).

31. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-6)

Super Bowl Odds: +100000
Previous Rank: 30

Jacksonville were competitive against the Chargers, however their 10 points loss keeps them well and truly in the race for Trevor Lawrence in next year’s draft. Although a new quarterback will not fix their problems on defense.

32. New York Jets (0-7)

Super Bowl Odds: +100000
Previous Rank: 32

To their credit the Jets actually kept things interesting against the Bills on Sunday. However, New York remains winless ahead of a Week 8 matchup with the 6-1 Kansas City Chiefs. That could get ugly.
