The Memphis Grizzlies (34-21, 11-16 Away) travel to face the Boston Celtics (40-16, 22-7 Home) Sunday in a matchup that pits suffocating defense against sensational offense.
Memphis dismantled the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-107 at FedExForum on Friday. With 32 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, Ja Morant led the way. The Grizzlies are the second seed in the Western Conference.
Boston won their third in a row on Friday at TD Garden, beating the Charlotte Hornets 127-116. Jayson Tatum led the team in scoring with 41 points. With 33 points, 10 assists, and three blocks, Derrick White also impressed.
The Celtics are first in the Eastern Conference, one game ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks. The teams are meeting for the final time this season. Boston will be pursuing a season sweep against Memphis after winning the only prior matchup 109-106 at FedExForum in November 2022, their third straight head-to-head victory.
Tatum led the Celtics with 39 points. Morant had 30 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds in defeat. The Grizzlies have been led this season by Morant, who is averaging 27.5 points per game, ninth-highest in the NBA.
Morant also has dished 8.3 assists per game, fourth-most in the NBA. Meanwhile, Steven Adams is grabbing 11.5 rebounds.Tatum (30.8 ppg) and Jaylen Brown (26.5) have supplied much of the Celts’ offense.
Tatum ranks sixth in the league. Tatum also has posted 8.6 rebounds per game. Marcus Smart has distributed 7.2 assists per game. The Grizzlies are leaders in defensive efficiency in the league, while the Celtics rank second in offensive efficiency.
The Grizzlies have had limited success at TD Garden in recent seasons, losing eight of the last 10 visits. Memphis is looking to snap a six-game losing run away from FedExForum this season.
