The San Diego Padres (28-32), one of the least productive offenses in the NL, is set to host the Seattle Mariners (29-30) at Petco Park on Tuesday to open a two-game Interleague series.

The Mariners are in the midst of an eight-game road trip. They are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Rangers, dropping the finale 12-3 on Sunday at Globe Life Field. Teoscar Hernandez was 2 for 3 with a triple and one run.

The Padres are in the midst of a six-game homestand. They split their last series against the Cubs, taking the finale 5-0 on Monday at Petco Park. Manny Machado went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs. Ha-Seong Kim added a double and one RBI.

The teams are meeting for the first time this season. Last season, the Mariners won three of the four games between the teams, although they split their most recent two-game series at T-Mobile Park in September.

ON THE MOUND

Logan Gilbert (3-3, 4.08 ERA) is slated to start for Seattle. The righty allowed seven runs (five earned) over four innings in his last start, a 10-2 road defeat against the Yankees on May 30. He took the loss, giving up seven hits while striking out four and walking one.

Over two starts against the Padres in 2022, Gilbert was 1-1 with a 1.74 ERA over 10.1 innings. He had six strikeouts and six walks. Righty Joe Musgrove (3-2, 5.64 ERA) takes the mound for San Diego.

In his last start on Thursday, Musgrove got the win on the road against the Marlins. He threw six innings and gave up one run (0 ER) on three hits, striking out three and walking three in the 10-1 triumph.

The Seattle offense is averaging 4.4 runs per game for the season, with a slash line of .228/.307/.376. Jarred Kelenic leads the team in OPS at .828. The center fielder is slashing .270/.333/.495 with 10 home runs, 27 RBIs, and 27 runs over 56 games.

Over the last five games, however, Seattle has averaged only 2.4 runs a game while slashing worse across the board (.210/.263/.269). Against right-handed pitchers like Musgrove this season, the M’s have a .682 OPS. J.P. Crawford is the team’s most potent producer against right-handers with a .825 OPS in 126 at-bats.

San Diego is slashing .222/.314/.382 for the season and averaging 4.1 runs per game, third lowest in the National League. Juan Soto leads the team with ann .883 OPS. The right fielder has 10 home runs, 27 RBIs, and 32 runs scored with a slash line of .248/.413/.470.

The Padres have a .674 OPS against right-handers in 2023. With a .981 OPS over 136 at-bats, Soto also has been their best hitter against right-handers.

HOME AND AWAY

Seattle is on a four-game losing streak in road games, bringing their record to 12-15 in 2023. The M’s have scored 4.4 runs per game away from home, while allowing 4.8 runs.

San Diego has gone 14-17 in front of their home fans this season, averaging 3.9 runs per game while surrendering 3.7. In the last 10 meetings at Petco Park, San Diego is 6-4 with an average scoreline of 6.2-4.5.

STANDINGS UPDATE

The Mariners are fourth in the AL West, 10 games behind the division-leading Rangers. The Padres are fourth in the NL West, seven games behind the Dodgers.
