Hot-hitting Luis Arraez will be looking to extend his 12-game hitting streak as the Miami Marlins (18-19) face off against the Arizona Diamondbacks (20-16) at Chase Field on Wednesday with the three-game series even at 1-1.
The Marlins evened up the series 1-1 after winning 6-2 on Tuesday, their third head-to-head victory in five games this season. Jesus Luzardo went six innings, giving up one run on seven hits, to get the win.
Jorge Soler was 2 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs in the win. Evan Longoria went 3 for 4 with a solo home run and a double for the Diamondbacks.
ON THE MOUND
Edward Cabrera (2-3, 4.78 ERA) is set to take the mound for Miami. The RHP allowed three runs over five innings in his last start, a 4-1 home defeat against the Cubs on Friday.
He was charged with the loss, giving up five hits while striking out eight and walking one. Righty Merrill Kelly (3-3, 2.75 ERA) will toe the rubber for Arizona. It’s his first appearance of the season against the Marlins.
Kelly made one start against the Marlins in 2022, throwing five innings in an 11-3 home defeat on May 11. He gave up seven hits and walked two, while striking out four in the no-decision.
In his last start on Friday, Kelly got the win at home against the Nationals. He threw seven innings and gave up one run on four hits, striking out 10 and walking one in the 3-1 triumph.
AT THE PLATE
Over the last five games, Miami has averaged 3.2 runs a game, a small drop compared to their season average of 3.4. Against righties like Kelly this season, the Fish have a .652 OPS, fifth lowest in MLB.
Arraez is the team’s best performer against right-handers with a 1.019 OPS in 91 at-bats. Arizona is averaging only 5.2 runs per game in the last five, consistent with their season average.
The D-backs have a .791 OPS against right-handers in 2023, fourth highest in MLB. With a .925 OPS over 81 at-bats, Corbin Carroll has been their best hitter against right-handers.
