Navy @ #13 Notre Dame – 2:30PM ET

Tony Battalio

The Naval Academy comes into the opening game of this season, looking to pull off a major upset of the rivals, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. This is a game that is played every single season and nine times out of 10. Notre Dame gets the best of the Navy. However, Navy always has the potential to upset anyone they play because of the style of football that they play on offense. The triple option that they run is a deadly offense that teams do not have much time to prepare for, and it certainly catches coaches and players by surprise. However, they are coming off of a 4-8 season where their offense did not do much damage, and with a new coordinator at the helm, they will be looking to improve upon that here in this one.

Notre Dame comes into the season with plenty of expectations and they will be hoping to reach the mountain top and get back to the college football playoffs. Last year was the year that they likely would’ve made it with a single loss on the schedule, but they looked awful to start the season, and it cost them in a big way. They have a brand new quarterback at the helm, this season and a brand new coordinator to run the offense. As Wake Forest transfer, Sam Hartman takes the reins from Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne. He is a top 10 quarterback in college football and he should be able to lead Notre Dame to a comfortable victory here on Saturday. That is why I have Notre Dame covering the spread here on Saturday afternoon.

SportsTips’ NCAAF Pick:

Notre Dame -20.5 (-110)

San Jose State @ #6 USC – 8PM ET

Tony Battalio

The San Jose State Spartans will be looking to put in an early contender for “upset of the season” with a victory over the USC Trojans here on Saturday night. They will have a tough task ahead of them going on the road to Los Angeles for this game against what is arguably one of the best teams in the nation. Last season San Jose State finished their season with a record of 6-5 before losing in their bowl game by a pair of touchdowns to Eastern Michigan. They were awful on the road last season as they lost four out of their five road games last season which is something they will vastly have to improve on.

Last year was an incredible season for the USC Trojans, but they came up just short of reaching their ultimate goal, and that was making the college football playoff. They were right on the doorstep of making their first playoff appearance in school history before they lost to Utah for the second time in the Pac-12 championship game. Caleb Williams returns as the starting quarterback after bringing home the Heisman Trophy last year, and he will be looking to grab his second consecutive Heisman Trophy this year, as well as lead USC to the college football playoffs. I don’t see this game being close as I expect the USC Trojans to cover the spread against the San Jose State Spartans to open up the season.

SportsTips’ NCAAF Pick:

USC -31.5 (-110)
