The No. 5 seed San Diego State Aztecs (28-6, 18-3 MWC) face the No. 13 seed Furman Paladins (28-7, 18-3 SoCon) Saturday at Amway Center in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Furman edged past the Virginia Cavaliers 68-67 at Amway Center on Thursday in the First Round, their seventh win in a row. Jalen Slawson had a standout performance with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
San Diego State won their fifth in a row in the First Round on Thursday at Amway Center, beating the Charleston Cougars 63-57. Matt Bradley had 17 points and seven rebounds, leading the team.
Mike Bothwell and Slawson, averaging 17.8 and 15.8 points per game, respectively, are leading the Paladins in scoring this season. Slawson also has grabbed 7.2 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, JP Pegues is dishing 4.0 assists per game.
Bradley has supplied much of the Aztecs’ offense, averaging 13.1 points per game. Nathan Mensah is averaging 5.8 rebounds per game, and Lamont Butler is tallying 3.3 assists.
The Paladins are averaging 81.7 points per game, ranking as one of the highest-scoring offenses in the country (9th). Furman is 9-1 in the last 10 games with an average margin of +11.0 (81.0-70.0).
San Diego State has also a 9-1 record over the last 10, scoring 65.7 points per game on average while holding opponents to 58.3 (+7.4 margin). The Aztecs are averaging 71.8 ppg for the full season while allowing 63.4.
