Xavier won their ninth straight home game in a close one on Wednesday at Cintas Center, beating the Providence Friars 85-83 in overtime. Jack Nunge had 23 points and 14 rebounds, carrying the team.
The Musketeers dropped to second in the Big East Conference. The teams are meeting for the last time this season. Xavier will be aiming for a season sweep against St. John’s after earning the win in the only previous game 84-79 at Carnesecca Arena in December 2022. Nunge led the Musketeers with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
David Jones had 19 points in the losing effort. The Red Storm have been led this season by Joel Soriano, who is averaging 16.0 points per game. Soriano also has grabbed 12.1 rebounds per game, fourth-most in the nation.
Meanwhile, Andre Curbelo is dishing 4.4 assists. Souley Boum (16.3 ppg), Zach Freemantle (15.2), and Nunge (14.5) have powered the Musketeers on offense. Freemantle also has pulled down 8.1 rebounds per game, while Boum has doled out 5.1 assists per game.
