The Virginia Tech Hokies (7-1) and No. 18 North Carolina Tar Heels (5-3) get their Atlantic Coast Conference schedules underway on Sunday at Cassell Coliseum. North Carolina dropped their last game against the Indiana Hoosiers 77-65 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Wednesday, their third straight loss.
Pete Nance had a standout performance in the loss with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Virginia Tech won their seventh in a row at home on Monday at Cassell Coliseum, beating the Minnesota Golden Gophers 67-57. Sean Pedulla had 17 points to lead the team. It’s the only meeting of the season between the teams.
They last met in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tourney semifinals when the Hokies knocked out the Tar Heels with a 72-59 victory at Barclays Center on March 11. North Carolina won both regular season matchups between the teams last season, the last of which was a 59-72 triumph at Barclays Center on March 11.
Darius Maddox led the Hokies with 20 points, while Keve Aluma added 18 points. Armando Bacot had 19 points and 14 rebounds in defeat.The Tar Heels have been led this season by Caleb Love, who is averaging 19.1 points per game. Meanwhile, Bacot is grabbing 11.1 rebounds per game, and RJ Davis is dishing 3.3 assists.
Pedulla (17.1 ppg) has supplied much of the Hokies’ offense. Pedulla also has doled out 4.0 assists per game. Justyn Mutts has pulled down 8.0 rebounds per game. With 80.4 points per game, the Tar Heels are one of the most explosive offenses in the league (3rd).
