The No. 2 Texas Longhorns (6-1), one of the NCAA’s top scoring defenses, host the Rice Owls (6-2, 0-1 CUSA) on Monday.Rice beat the Texas State Bobcats 83-71 at Strahan Coliseum on December 4, their fifth win in a row. Quincy Olivari was the key player with 30 points.
Texas lost on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, falling to the Illinois Fighting Illini 85-78. Timmy Allen had 21 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds in defeat, carrying the team.
The Longhorns came out on top in the last meeting between the teams 66-55 at Frank Erwin Special Events Center in December 2014, their third straight against the Owls.
The Owls have been led this season by Travis Evee and Olivari, who are averaging 16.9 and 16.3 points per game, respectively. Meanwhile, Max Fiedler is contributing 7.0 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game.
Tyrese Hunter and Marcus Carr have supplied much of the Longhorns’ offense, averaging 15.1 and 14.6 points per game, respectively. Carr also has recorded 4.1 assists per game. Allen has averaged 6.7 rebounds per game. The Longhorns are one of the top scoring defenses in the NCAA, ranking 24th with 59.4 points per game allowed.
