The No. 2 Texas Longhorns (6-0) play host to the No. 16 Illinois Fighting Illini (6-2, 0-1 Big 10) Tuesday in a game that may see lower point totals. Illinois was defeated by the Maryland Terrapins 71-66 at Xfinity Center on Friday.
Terrence Shannon Jr. had a standout performance in the losing effort with 19 points and seven rebounds. Texas won their sixth in a row on Thursday at Moody Center, beating the Creighton Bluejays 72-67. Marcus Carr had 19 points, leading the team.
The Fighting Illini have been led this season by Shannon Jr., who is averaging 19.8 points per game. Shannon Jr. also has grabbed 6.4 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Coleman Hawkins is dishing 4.0 assists. Tyrese Hunter (16.0 ppg) and Carr (15.5) have powered the Longhorns’ offense.
Carr also has doled out 4.0 assists per game. Timmy Allen has averaged 6.7 rebounds per game. The Longhorns and the Fighting Illini are two of the best defenses in the nation, ranking sixth and 15th in defensive efficiency, respectively.
