The No. 18 San Diego State Aztecs (23-6, 14-3 MWC), one of the top scoring defenses in the Mountain West Conference, host the Wyoming Cowboys (9-20, 4-13 MWC) on Saturday.
Wyoming defeated the Nevada Wolf Pack 80-71 at Arena-Auditorium on Monday. With 28 points, Jeremiah Oden was the leading scorer. Hunter Maldonado was another standout performer with 25 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds. The Cowboys remain 11th in the Mountain West Conference.
San Diego State lost on Tuesday at ExtraMile Arena, falling to the Boise State Broncos 66-60. Matt Bradley had 16 points and six rebounds in the losing effort to lead the team. The Aztecs remain first in the Mountain West Conference.
It’s the last meeting of the season between the teams. San Diego State will be pursuing a season sweep against Wyoming after earning the win in the only previous game 80-75 at Arena-Auditorium on January 7, their ninth straight head-to-head victory.
Lamont Butler led the Aztecs with 23 points. Maldonado had 20 points in the losing effort. Maldonado is averaging 15.3 points per game to lead the Cowboys in scoring this season. Maldonado also has dished 4.1 assists per game.
Meanwhile, Hunter Thompson is grabbing 5.2 rebounds.Bradley’s 13.1 points per game have powered the Aztecs on offense. Nathan Mensah is collecting 5.9 rebounds per game, and Darrion Trammell is distributing 3.5 assists.
The Aztecs rank as one of the top scoring defenses in the MWC, second-best with 64.9 points per game allowed. The Cowboys have not found any success at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl in recent seasons, winless in the last 10 trips.
Wyoming is 3-7 in the last 10 games with an average margin of -3.9 (68.8-72.7). San Diego State has gone 8-2 over the last 10, scoring 69.5 points per game on average while holding opponents to 62.3 (+7.2 margin).
