The San Diego State Aztecs (24-6, 15-3 MWC) face the Colorado State Rams (15-17, 7-12 MWC) Thursday at Thomas & Mack Center in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament.
Colorado State narrowly defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs 67-65 at Thomas & Mack Center yesterday in the first round. John Tonje was a top performer with 20 points. San Diego State won their sixth home game in a row on Saturday at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl, beating the Wyoming Cowboys 67-50 to close out their regular season.
Jaedon LeDee had 21 points and eight rebounds, carrying the team. San Diego State swept the regular season against Colorado State, getting the win in both of their games, the most recent of which was a 77-58 victory at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl on February 21, their third straight head-to-head victory.
LeDee led the Aztecs with 14 points, while Lamont Butler added 11 points. Tonje had 18 points in defeat. Isaiah Stevens and Tonje, averaging 16.6 and 14.5 points per game, respectively, have led the Rams in scoring this season.
Tonje also has grabbed 4.8 rebounds per game, while Stevens has dished 6.2 assists per game, ninth-most in the country. Matt Bradley (13.0 ppg) has supplied much of the Aztecs’ offense. Nathan Mensah is averaging 5.8 rebounds per game, and Darrion Trammell is distributing 3.4 assists.
The Rams are shooting 49.1% from the field, ranking as one of the most accurate field goal shooting teams in the nation (11th). Colorado State is 5-5 in the last 10 games with an average margin of -1.7 (70.4-72.1).
San Diego State has gone 8-2 over the last 10, scoring 67.7 points per game on average while holding opponents to 59.8 (+7.9 margin). The Aztecs are averaging 72.9 ppg for the full season while allowing 64.4.
