The No. 20 Providence Friars (18-7, 10-4 Big East) play host to the No. 23 Creighton Bluejays (17-8, 11-3 Big East), who will be looking to prolong their winning streak, on Tuesday.
Creighton narrowly defeated the UConn Huskies 56-53 at CHI Health Center Omaha on Saturday, their eighth win in a row. Trey Alexander was the top scorer with 17 points. Ryan Kalkbrenner chipped in with 12 points. The Bluejays remain second in the Big East Conference.
Providence lost on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, falling to the St. John’s Red Storm 73-68. Bryce Hopkins had 29 points and nine rebounds in defeat, leading the team. The Friars remain fourth in the Big East Conference.
It’s the final meeting of the season between the teams. Creighton will be aiming for a season sweep against Providence after triumphing in the only previous matchup 73-67 at CHI Health Center Omaha on January 14.
Kalkbrenner led the Bluejays with 21 points, while Alexander added 20 points and six rebounds. Hopkins had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort. Alexander (13.4 ppg), Kalkbrenner (13.2), and Baylor Scheierman (13.2) have led the Bluejays in scoring this season. Scheierman also has grabbed 8.3 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, Ryan Nembhard is dishing 5.1 assists per game.Hopkins (16.6 ppg) has supplied much of the Friars’ offense. Hopkins also has averaged 9.2 rebounds per game. Jared Bynum has recorded 3.8 assists per game.
