The Jackson State Tigers (1-8) will try to break down one of the country’s top scoring defenses when they are on the road to face the No. 17 Mississippi State Bulldogs (9-0) on Wednesday. Jackson State dropped their last game against the Akron Zips 85-72 at James A. Rhodes Arena on Sunday.

Jamarcus Jones was the standout player in defeat with 16 points. Mississippi State won their ninth in a row in impressive fashion on Sunday at Williams Arena, beating the Minnesota Golden Gophers 69-51.

Tolu Smith led the team in scoring with 20 points. With 17 points, Shakeel Moore also produced a strong performance. The Bulldogs came out on top in the last meeting between the teams 82-59 at Humphrey Coliseum in December 2020, their third straight against the Tigers. Iverson Molinar led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Tristan Jarrett had 17 points in the loss.

Trace Young and Ken Evans Jr., averaging 12.6 and 12.3 points per game, respectively, are leading the Tigers in scoring this season. Evans Jr. also has dished 3.8 assists per game. Meanwhile, Romelle Mansel is grabbing 6.2 rebounds per game.

Smith (16.7 ppg) has supplied much of the Bulldogs’ offense. Smith also has pulled down 9.4 rebounds per game. Cameron Matthews has distributed 2.3 assists per game. The Bulldogs rank as one of the toughest scoring defenses in the country, second-best with 49.8 points per game allowed.
