The Memphis Tigers (23-7, 13-4 AAC), one of the nation’s top scoring teams, play host to the No. 1 Houston Cougars (28-2, 16-1 AAC) on Sunday.
Houston beat the Wichita State Shockers 83-66 at Fertitta Center on Thursday, their 10th straight win. Jamal Shead was the standout player with 25 points.
The Cougars remain first in the American Athletic Conference. Memphis won their third in a row in dominating fashion on Thursday at Moody Coliseum, beating the SMU Mustangs 81-62. Kendric Davis had 23 points and 10 assists to lead the team. The Tigers are second in the American Athletic Conference.
The teams are meeting for the last time this season. Houston will be looking for a season sweep against Memphis after earning the win in the only previous game 72-64 at Fertitta Center on February 19. J’Wan Roberts led the Cougars with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Elijah McCadden had 20 points in defeat.
Marcus Sasser is averaging 17.3 points per game to lead the Cougars in scoring this season. Meanwhile, Roberts is grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game, and Shead is dishing 5.3 assists. Davis (21.3 ppg) has supplied much of the Tigers’ offense. He ranks as the 10th-highest scorer in the NCAA. Davis also has tallied 5.8 assists per game.
DeAndre Williams has collected 7.8 rebounds per game. With 79.9 points per game, the Tigers are one of the top scoring offenses in the nation (23rd). In the last 10 games, Houston is 10-0 with an average margin of +16.9 (78.8-61.9).
For the season, the Cougars are averaging 76.3 points per game, compared to 56.2 for opponents. Memphis has gone 8-2 over the last 10, scoring 82.1 points per game on average while holding opponents to 74.8 (+7.3 margin).
