The No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers (23-3, 12-3 Big 10) head to face the Maryland Terrapins (17-8, 8-6 Big 10) Thursday in what should be a slow-paced game. Purdue lost to the Northwestern Wildcats 64-58 at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday.
Zach Edey led the way in the losing effort with 24 points and three blocks. The Boilermakers are first in the Big Ten Conference. Maryland won their eighth straight home game on Saturday at Xfinity Center, beating the Penn State Nittany Lions 74-68.
Hakim Hart had 23 points to lead the team. The Terrapins fell to ninth in the Big Ten Conference. It’s the last meeting of the season between the teams. Purdue will be seeking a season sweep against Maryland after triumphing in the only earlier game 58-55 at Mackey Arena on January 22.
Edey led the Boilermakers with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Julian Reese had 19 points in the losing effort. Edey is averaging 21.3 points per game, ninth-highest in the country, to lead the Boilermakers in scoring this season.
Edey also has grabbed 12.5 rebounds per game, most in the nation. Meanwhile, Braden Smith is dishing 4.4 assists. Jahmir Young has supplied much of the Terrapins’ offense, averaging 16.2 points per game. Young also has doled out 3.2 assists per game. Donta Scott has posted 6.2 rebounds per game.
Half-court execution will be critical in this matchup that showcases a pair of the country’s slowest-paced teams, as the Boilermakers are 352nd in possessions per game while the Terrapins are 322nd.
