The No. 12 Gonzaga Bulldogs (24-5, 13-2 WCC) play host to the No. 15 Saint Mary’s Gaels (25-5, 14-1 WCC) Saturday in a matchup that pits explosive offense against tremendous defense. Saint Mary’s blew out the Pacific Tigers 83-52 at University Credit Union Pavilion on Thursday, their fourth consecutive win.
Logan Johnson was the standout player with 29 points and seven assists. The Gaels remain first in the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga won their fifth in a row in dominant fashion on Thursday at McCarthey Athletic Center, beating the San Diego Toreros 97-72.
Drew Timme had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the team. The Bulldogs remain second in the West Coast Conference. This marks the final meeting of the season between the teams.
Saint Mary’s will be pursuing a season sweep against Gonzaga after winning the only prior game 78-70 in overtime at University Credit Union Pavilion on February 4.
Aidan Mahaney led the Gaels with 18 points, while Mitchell Saxen contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds. Timme had 23 points in the losing effort.
The Gaels have been led this season by Mahaney and Johnson, who are averaging 14.8 and 14.3 points per game, respectively. Johnson also has dished 3.7 assists per game. Meanwhile, Saxen is grabbing 8.3 rebounds per game. Timme (21.3 ppg) has been the primary provider of the Bulldogs’ offense.
Timme also has pulled down 7.5 rebounds per game. Nolan Hickman has tallied 3.4 assists per game. The Bulldogs rank No. 1 in the nation in offensive efficiency, while the Gaels are seventh in defensive efficiency.
The Gaels have struggled in recent visits to McCarthey Athletic Center, losing eight of the last 10.In the last 10 games, Saint Mary’s is 9-1 with an average margin of +11.9 (72.4-60.5).
