The St. John’s Red Storm (12-6, 2-5 Big East) will try to slow down one of the nation’s top scoring teams when they head to face the No. 6 UConn Huskies (15-3, 4-3 Big East) on Sunday. St. John’s defeated the Butler Bulldogs 77-61 at Carnesecca Arena on Tuesday. With 20 points and 10 rebounds, Joel Soriano had a standout performance.
The Red Storm fell to ninth in the Big East Conference. UConn dropped their last game on Wednesday at Fiserv Forum, falling to the Marquette Golden Eagles 82-76. Donovan Clingan had 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks in defeat to lead the team. The Huskies improved to fourth in the Big East Conference.
This marks the only meeting of the season between the teams. UConn won both games between the teams last season, the last of which was a 63-60 triumph at Madison Square Garden in February 2022. Tyrese Martin led the Huskies with 17 points, while Isaiah Whaley added 11 points, seven rebounds, and five blocks.
Montez Mathis had 14 points in defeat. Soriano is averaging 16.4 points per game to lead the Red Storm in scoring this season. Soriano also has grabbed 12.0 rebounds per game, second-most in the nation.
Meanwhile, Andre Curbelo is dishing 4.9 assists. Adama Sanogo (17.4 ppg) has supplied much of the Huskies’ offense. Sanogo also has collected 6.7 rebounds per game. Tristen Newton has tallied 4.3 assists per game. The Huskies are one of the top scoring offenses in the nation, ranking 29th with 80.0 points per game.
