Round 3 Tennis Picks at Wimbledon: Men’s Draw

Oscar Otte (32) vs Carlos Alcaraz (5)

The 32nd seed, Oscar Otte will face off against young hotshot, Carlos Alcaraz, in the third round at The Championships. The German has had a very easy ride into the third round, he won his first round matchup in three comfortable sets, and then only played four games in his Round 2 match, before his opponent retired. Alcaraz struggled in the first round, with that match going the distance, but he quickly put all that behind him, winning in the second round in straight sets.

Jeffery Thomas

There were a few concerns about the young sensation Carlos Alcaraz after the first round where he was taken to five sets by the German Jan-Lennard Struff. He didn’t play any lead-up grass tournaments heading into Wimbledon and it was clear he’s not a comfortable or a natural mover on the surface. None of that mattered in the second round however, as his talent was able to get him to blow past Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets and make it to his first third round here at Wimbledon. He will now face another dangerous German, Oscar Otte who has yet to be tested to this point.

Otte dominated his first round opponent Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets before going up an early break on Christian Harrison in the second round before he retired. All in all, Otte has only spent about 90 minutes on court compared to over 6 hours for Carlos to get to this stage. Otte has two grass quarterfinals under his belt this season and is one of the most in-form players at the moment, setting this up to be a true test for the young Spaniard. I can definitely see Carlos winning but this match sets up to be a tight one so give me Otte and the games.

Jeffery’s Wimbledon Pick:

Game Spread – Otte +5.5 (-175)

Carlos Alcaraz is the next great hope of the world of tennis. The 19-year-old has already found his way to the top 10 as he is currently at no. 7 with his career-high being one spot higher. The Spaniard is coming off a 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 win in the second round against Tallon Griekspoor after surviving a thriller in the opening round against Jan-Lennard Struff, winning in 5 sets with 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Alcaraz is 34-6 for the season and 2-2 on grass. This season he has won in Madrid, Barcelona, Miami and Rio de Janeiro.

Oscar Otte is in the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career. He played only 4 games in the second round as the qualifier Christopher Harrison retired with an injury. In the opening round, Otte defeated fellow German Peter Gojowczyk, losing only 4 games in the match. Otte is currently at his career-high ranking at no. 36. He is 21-17 for the season and 7-2 on grass. He reached the semifinals in Halle and Stuttgart on grass, losing to Daniil Medvedev and Mateo Berrettini.

Marko’s Wimbledon Pick:

Set Betting – Alcaraz 3-0 (+165)

After an almighty first round scare against Jan-Lennard Struff, it was back to business as usual for Carlos Alcaraz who advanced to the third round with a straight set win over Tallon Griekspoor. This is only the young Spaniard’s second ever Wimbledon and this will be the first time he has ever played in the third round. It’s difficult to know what to expect from Alcaraz at Wimbledon, obviously a great player, he has to be one of the least experienced players on grass and each round could be a real battle.

Oscar Otte is in the conversation for the game’s most improved players. A year ago Otte was ranked just inside the top 100 whereas this year the German is seeded at 32 in the draw. Otte is a tricky customer, unorthodox in his style, his ranginess and all round consistency can cause his opponents plenty of issues. With a deceptively good serve, Otte will certainly push Alcaraz today. One area where Alcaraz has the definite advantage is in power and this could be what gives him the edge. I don’t expect this to be straightforward, Alcaraz should win but Otte will win at least one set.

Jack’s Wimbledon Pick:

Set Betting – Alcaraz 3-1 (+275)

Cameron Norrie (9) vs Steve Johnson

Local favorite, Cameron Norrie, will take on unseeded American, Steve Johnson, in the next round at Wimbledon. Norrie’s first round match was clinical, winning in straight sets, but it was a different story in the second round, where he was pushed to five sets against Munar. Johnson got lucky in the first round when 18th seed, Dimitrov, retired hurt in the second set, but he put that luck to good work in the second round, winning in straight sets.

Jeffery Thomas

Local star Cameron Norrie has taken out a couple of Spaniards, Pablo Andujar and Jaime Munar, to reach the third round here at Wimbledon. The world number 12 was severely tested in the match against Munar last round, trailing 1 set to 2 before winning the fourth set 6-0 and the fifth 6-2 to advance. He has been far from his best but is still just one win away from producing his best result at a Grand Slam to date. Standing in his way of that feat is Steve Johnson who took out Norris’s fellow Brit Ryan Peniston in the second round.

It was a great win for the American as Peniston had reached four straight grass quarterfinals earlier this month. That was a straight sets win for Johnson and now he’ll face Cameron Norrie for the first time ever as he seeks his second career win at this stage of a Grand Slam. Neither guy is playing at their top level at the moment, but I do have to favor the Brit in this matchup, as he’s had far more success in the past couple years and is just the more gifted player, but that won’t come without Johnson stealing a set first.

Jeffery’s Wimbledon Pick:

Player To Win A Set – Johnson (-210)

Cameron Norrie made a huge leap last season reaching the ATP Finals in December. He found his way in the top 10 by the end of 2021 and right now is at no. 12. Norrie is coming off a difficult match against Jaume Munar, coming back from 1-2 down to win 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-0 and 6-2. In the opening round, Norrie had no problems against Pablo Andujar winning in straight sets. Norrie is 29-15 this season and 3-2 on grass. He has won two titles this season, in Lyon and Delray Beach.

Steve Johnson is in the third round of Wimbledon for the third time in his career. The American got lucky in the first round as Grigor Dimitrov had to retire even though the Bulgarian had the lead. In the second round, Johnson defeated Ryan Peniston in straight sets by 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Johnson is currently 93rd in the ATP rankings with his career-high being at no. 21. He is 19-14 for the season and 4-2 on grass. Johnson’s best result this season came in Sarasota where he reached the final, losing to Daniel Galan.

Steve Johnson has enjoyed a welcome return to form with the big-hitting American reaching the 3rd round for the 4th time in his career. With a game perfectly suited for grass, it isn’t a surprise that Wimbledon is the Slam that Johnson has performed the best at throughout his career. Johnson received a fair slice of luck in the first round after his opponent Grigor Dimitrov pulled out injured after winning the first set in their encounter. He took full advantage of that luck when dispatching British wildcard Ryan Peniston in three comfortable sets.

It’s another Brit that Johnson faces in today’s third round when Johnson takes on Cam Norrie. Norrie is looking to advance to the 4th round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career and looks to have been given a fine opportunity to achieve that feat. Grass is by no means Norrie’s favorite surface and that was shown by his gutsy five set win over Spaniard Jaume Munar. Norrie has quickly established himself as one of the most consistent players on tour and it’s that consistency that should see him victorious here.

Jack’s Wimbledon Pick:

Set Betting – Norrie 3-0 (+140)

Nick Kyrgios vs Stefanos Tsitsipas (4)

The opinionated Nick Kyrgios will take on the fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, in what is sure to be a firecracker of a match. Kyrgios was pushed to five sets in the opening round at Wimbledon, but completely dispatched the 26th seed, Krajinović, in straight sets. Tsitsipas was taken to four sets in the first round, and in this last match, against Australian Thompson, he won in straight sets.

Jeffery Thomas

Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas will meet again on grass after seeing each in Halle just a couple weeks ago where Nick rallied from a set down to advance to the quarterfinals. This time they will meet at a Grand Slam and due to the surface, Kyrgios once again comes in as the favorite. He was tested a bit in the first round where he was taken to five sets by Paul Jubb but balanced that out with a straight sets drubbing of Filip Krajinovic in the second round. Stefanos has only dropped one set so far and that was in the first round against Switzerland’s Alexander Ritschard.

He then rolled through Jordan Thompson in straight sets and now is on a 6-match winning streak after winning the grass title in Mallorca last week. When these two match up, it’s been Kyrgios who has won the majority of the meetings (3 of 4) and they usually go to a deciding set. I can see the same happening here as Stef is finding his grass form more and more with each passing match, and I just don’t see him going down without a fight.

Jeffery’s Wimbledon Pick:

The third round of Wimbledon brings a matchup between two players who play excellent on grass and were projected to be among the best in the world by now. Stefanos Tsitsipas is ranked no. 4 at the moment, and is 42-13 for the season and 8-2 on grass. He came to Wimbledon after winning the tournament in Mallorca last week. Tsitsipas had easy opponents in the first two rounds in Wimbledon. In the first one, he won 3-1 against Alexander Ritschard and won in straight sets against Jordan Thompson in the second round.

Nick Kyrgios will be on the other side of the net in this match. The Australian leads 3-1 in head-to-heads against Tsitsipas, winning this season in Halle on grass 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Kyrgios is ranked no. 40 at the moment with his career-high being at no. 13. He is 18-6 for the season and 9-2 on grass. Kyrgios had a tough opening of the tournament against the wildcard Paul Jabb winning in 5 sets, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-7, 7-5. In the second round Kyrgios took care of business against Filip Krajinovic, winning by 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

Despite being the lesser ranked player, the grass court surface should really suit Nick Kygrios and as long as the Aussie’s head is in the game, he starts out as my favorite for this exciting clash. Kygrios was at his worst in the first round as he was pushed all the way by British wildcard Paul Jubb. His five set victory was marred by plenty of incidents with Kygrios even receiving a fine for a nasty scene at the end of his victory. His straight set victory over Serbian Filip Krajinovic couldn’t have been more different, and Kygrios was a picture of determination and focus, as he routed the Queen’s finalist in three easy sets. If he wants to be, Kygrios could be a real force at this year’s tournament.

It’s strange that someone who is ranked five in the world enters a tournament flying completely under the radar but that’s exactly what has happened with Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek has had a mixed year and a deep run at this year’s Championships wasn’t widely anticipated. He is trying to flip expectations on their head and his two wins for the loss of just one set have been comfortable. The two squared off recently at Halle where Kygrios got the better of the Greek over three sets. This match once again will be tight, but on grass it’s the Aussie who I’m going to back.

Match Winner – Kyrgios (-143)

Round 3 Tennis Picks at Wimbledon: Women’s Draw

Diane Parry vs Ons Jabeur (3)

Unseeded Diane Parry will need to be at the top of her game when she takes on the third seed, Ons Jabeur, in Round 3. Parry is yet to drop a set in this tournament so far, beating the 31st seed Kanepi in the first round, and unseeded Hontama in the second round. So far this tournament, Jabeur has only dropped eight games, and has to be feeling good about her chances, with some upsets opening up the draw slightly.

Jeffery Thomas

Ons Jabeur rolled through the second round here at Wimbledon with a 6-4, 6-0 win over qualifier Katarzyna Kawa, moving her grass record to 7-0 on the season. It was surprisingly the first win for the world number 2 at a Grand Slam event all season as she had to withdraw from the Australian Open and was upset in the first round of the French Open. She now will look to continue her great form against the Frenchwoman Diane Parry.

Parry also made a run to the third round at the French Open before being booted out in straight sets by Sloane Stephens, so she is not new to winning these matches at a major. She has yet to drop a set, beating Kaia Kanepi in the first round and then Mai Hontama in the second round. Advancing any further would be a surprise to everyone as Ons Jabeur is the second favorite behind Iga to win the whole tournament. This is a match that won’t give much resistance to the Tunisian, and she should get this done in straight sets.

Jeffery’s Wimbledon Pick:

Set Betting – Jabeur 2-0 (-333)

World no. 2 Ons Jabeur has made it to the third round in Wimbledon after defeating Katarzyna Kawa in the second round by 6-4, 6-0 and Mirjam Bjoklund in the opening round by 6-4, 6-0. Jabeur is 32-9 this season including a perfect 7-0 on grass. She won two titles this season, last week in Berlin on grass and in May in Madrid. Last season Jabeur made it to the quarterfinal in Wimbledon, losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

Jabeur will play Diane Parry for the first time in her career. Parry is currently at her career-high 77th place in the WTA rankings. The 19-year-old came to Wimbledon for the first time in her career and made it to the third round after defeating Mai Hontama 6-3, 6-2 in the second round and Kaia Kanepi 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round. Parry is 14-15 for the season and 5-1 on grass.

World number 2 Ons Jabeur will have been delighted with how she has performed so far at this year’s tournament. Jabeur has enjoyed a good grass court season, winning in Berlin which provided the perfect preparation for a deep run here. There were some concerns that a knee injury could derail the Tunisian’s chances of glory but those fears seem to have subsided. Despite being 27 it’s clear that Jabeur is learning and adapting her game all the time. She plays like no other player on the WTA tour and has clearly learned to couple consistency with her amazing variety.

In today’s match she faces off against Diane Parry. The young 19 year old is enjoying her best ever Grand Slam run and she is certainly a name to watch out for in the future. This is a tough assignment for the Frenchwoman and whether she can handle Jabeur’s variety is going to be the ultimate factor in the match. Backing Jabeur to win doesn’t provide a huge amount of value so I will try and predict the first set score which I think the Tunisian will win 6-3.

Correct Score First Set – Jabeur 6-3 (+350)

Coco Gauff (11) vs Amanda Anisimova (20)

Another all-American clash that will ensure we see an American in the Round of 16, and this time we will see the 11th seed, Coco Gauff, take on the 20th seed, Amanda Anisimova. After dropping the first set in her first round clash, Gauff hasn’t dropped a set since, and in the second round, she only dropped five games. Anisimova beat her first round opponent in straight sets, it was a little trickier in the second round when she beat compatriot, Davis, in three sets.

Jeffery Thomas

A popcorn match here in the third round as we get two Americans facing off for a chance to advance to the fourth round at Wimbledon. Coco Gauff bounced back from her scare in the first round to coast in the second, winning in straight sets over 34-year old Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu. Gauff had a perfect day on serve in that match, not even facing one break point and was off the court in just under an hour and a half. Things were a bit tougher for her compatriot Amanda Anisimova in the second round as she was pushed to three sets by Lauren Davis.

Davis raced out to an early lead, taking the first set 6-2 but Anisimova quickly got things back on track, taking the remaining sets 6-3, 6-4. The most recent matchup between these two was last season on clay when Coco beat Amanda in straight sets pretty easily. That is Coco’s best surface so things may be different here but the Wimby grass also suits Coco much better than it does for Anisimova. For that reason, I think it will be another straightforward victory for the teenager who is looking to make her third Wimbledon fourth round appearance of her young career.

Jeffery’s Wimbledon Pick:

Match Winner – Gauff (-225)

This will be a match between two players who will be at the top of women tennis in the next decade. Coco Gauff is having an amazing season as the 19-year-old has reached no. 12 in the WTA rankings. She reached the final at Roland Garros and is playing well in Wimbledon as well. The American is coming off a 6-2, 6-3 win in the second round over Mihaela Buzarnescu and a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Elena Ruse in the first round. Gauff will face Amanda Anisimova next who she defeated in Parma last year by 6-3, 6-3. Gauff is 25-12 for the season and 5-1 on grass.

Amanda Anisimova is currently 25th in the WTA rankings with her career-high being at no. 21. The American is 27-10 for the season and 4-1 on grass. She is coming off a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Lauren Davis in the second round after she defeated Yue Yuan in the first round by 6-3, 6-4. Anisimova started the season with a win in Melbourne and reached the semifinal in Charleston.

Match Winner – Gauff (-225)

Jack Hartman

This contest between Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova is arguably one of the most exciting matches on either side of the draw in this third round. Both players have entered this stage having won a match in straight sets and having won the other in three, so both have had to survive a scare in reaching this far. With just two years between them, this could be the start of a special rivalry between two players who won’t give an inch.

The head to head record between the two stands at one apiece and it’s a hard match to call here. Gauff has the better Grand Slam experience having reached the final of this year’s French Open, she is also the better grass court player having reached the fourth round on both her previous visits. Anisimova has the power to cause Gauff all sorts of issues but Gauff’s recovery skills, consistency and athleticism could negate Anisimova’s strengths. This is a contest that could go either way but I will side with Gauff to get the win and reach the 4th round once again.

Jack’s Wimbledon Pick:

Set Betting – Gauff 2-0 (+105)

Petra Martić vs Jessica Pegula (8)

Unseeded Petra Martić will take on our top seeded American left in the tournament, Jessica Pegula, in the third round. Martić is yet to drop a set so far at Wimbledon, beating American Rogers in the first round, and unseeded Kučová in the second round. Pegula won her first round appearance in straight sets, but was made to work for it in the second round, being pushed to three sets by Brit Dart.

Jeffery Thomas

Jessie Pegula and Petra Martic are set to face off in round three here at Wimbledon, the sixth meeting of their careers. Martic is the underdog in this meeting despite the fact that she has dominated this head-to-head historically, winning 4 of the 5 meetings. It is also despite the fact that Martic has got to this point of the tournament without dropping a set, making light work of both Shelby Rogers and Kristina Kucova. Jessie has had a bit of a tougher time, most specifically last round when she had to rally from a set down to beat Harriet Dart. It was a slow start for Pegula, losing serve in her first two service games and never being able to recover that second break back in the first set.

From that point on though she was only broken once while she was able to break Dart a total of five times, cruising to the win with a 6-1 deciding set. She now hopes to continue marching on and continuing her Grand Slam success in 2022 as Pegula has reached at least the quarterfinals at both Grand Slam events earlier this season. Martic will make it difficult as she is the better grass court player historically, but I ultimately do have Jessie moving past her as she’s just displayed much better form this season, shown by her ranking that is up now in the top 10. Expect this match to be tight but I am going with the favorite.

Jeffery’s Wimbledon Pick:

Set Betting – Pegula 2-1 (+290)

Jessica Pegula is currently no. 9 in the WTA rankings but will go against a player who has defeated her 4 times so far. Pegula is coming off a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Harriet Dart in the second round after she defeated Donna Vekic in the opening round by 6-3, 7-6. The American is 25-12 this season and 2-0 on grass. Her best result this season was the final in Madrid and semifinal in Miami.

Petra Martic found her way to the third round in Wimbledon for the third time in her career. The 31-year-old defeated Kristina Kucova in the second round by 7-6, 6-3 after she was better than Shelby Rogers in the opening round by 6-2, 7-6. Martic leads Pegula 4-1 in head to heads, defeating her in Rome last year, the last time these two met. Martic is 19-13 this season and 2-2 on grass. Her best result came in Indian Wells where she made it to the quarterfinals.

Match Winner – Martic (+105)

Jessica Pegula is aiming to reach the quarter final stage of a Grand Slam for the third consecutive time following deep runs in both the Australian and French Opens. Pegula is one of my favorite players to watch on the WTA Tour. Pugnacious, consistent and a player with great variety, Pegula has shown she can mix it with the very best. However, despite being the higher ranked player in this match, she has really struggled against Petra Martic in her career having only beaten the Croatian woman once and losing four times. There is something about Martic’s game that makes Pegula uncomfortable and this match certainly won’t be easy.

Martic is ranked at 80 in the world but is a far better player than that. Formerly a fixture inside the world’s top twenty, Martic is attempting to advance to the 4th round for the third time in her career and her game and height is nicely suited to the grass. Concentration can be Martic’s weakness but she has already shown in this tournament that her game seems to be in a good place following straight set wins over Shelby Rogers and Kristina Kucova. This is a whole new challenge but she has a great chance of extending her record over Pegula to 5-1.

Jack’s Wimbledon Pick:

Set Betting – Martic 2-1 (+525)
